Reputation is a rough measurement of how much the community trusts you;
First line on rep page says it all...

The other day I saw his profile at -250

I'd really like this thread not to be used to discuss a single user in this way. It's unfair.

I think rep is not a very good way of measuring community trust. I mean, if I played world of warcraft, I could post a bunch of screenshots, and get a bunch of rep, but people would still trust me as much as they do right now. I could have 1 million reputation, or negative one million, but is it going to make any of you think differently about me? Highly doubtful. It's just a number that wowhead uses to try to get users to participate in a positive way, by uploading screenshots, making useful comments, reporting abuse, etc. It's not a reputation for you and the community, but a reputation with you and the entity that is wowhead. My rep is very low compared to other users who have been here as long as I have, but that is very much because I don't play world of warcraft, and thus don't contribute to wowhead's other areas besides off-topic. There is no mechanism that gives rep for participating in debates, or the things that I do. That's why reputation doesn't matter to me. It doesn't measure anything meaningful to me. If someone has a lower/higher rep than me, it doesn't matter, much like someone's post count doesn't matter. Interest has the most post count as anyone, but if his participation in a debate thread could be outshined by someone who just made their account 15 minutes ago and makes their first post.

We're not really discussing him so much as he's the only user with negative rep on the website.

I never understood this. Not just with you. But in general, if someone doesn't play the game the entire site was made for, why bother using the site? If I quit playing WoW (not going to happen) But if I did, I wouldn't keep coming to "Wowhead." I mean is the community feeling that great?
I don't mean this as a fight either, I really truly want to understand the logic.

I quite WOW ages ago. But I like the community of Wowhead.
WoW so quite.

This furthers my point. Participation in WoW is nearly a requirement for a high reputation in Wowhead. Though, you could still be highly reputable with the community, without having a high wowhead reputation. Thus, I don't feel it is a very good tool.
