Well, i have to admit, on my paladin alt, who i got chest and shoulders for, i often look at the AH for a upgrade to my other gear slots. However, im being more conservertive with upgrading, only buying it if its a really good upgrade. Like thoose quest reward bracers i got 6 lvl's ago, and i see some neat newbracers with double the stats. i still take them. :)

You can buy an odd gear piece from the AH, tho I would not bother when you hit outland. Everything is replaced and better yet: the gear from quests, rep and instances have gem slots. Socket uncommon WotLK gems and you're set until Northrend.

I never buy any gear on the auction hall. To me, it seems like a waste of money. The gear will be replaced within a few levels, and going to the auction hall takes time away from leveling. I'll admit though, that I try to level as fast as possible most of the time, and the gear probably would get upgraded within a day of solid playing. If I feel I need upgrades, I'll try and get a group for a dungeon, although that isn't always easy.

I'll occasionally by stuff for my rogue on the AH if the price is right. I can get a huge "...of the monkey" upgrade for like 1g sometimes. I have also found that replacing my weapons about every 10 levels really speeds things up. IMO spending 20g for a nice blue weapon is cheap when you can do one daily to make up for it.

It can be worth it but it's nothing I would spend more than a couple of minutes on in the AH. The gold you'd spend to buy the upgrades is negligible so it really comes down to whether you're saving more time leveling with the new weapon/armor than you're spending in the AH finding it. That threshold is going to be rather low unless a) you're rocking some awful grey/white item or something from 30 levels ago or b) you're just about to step into Outland where the gear disparity from old world quest rewards to Outland is huge and it can be helpful in the first half of HFP. So keep the AH trips short and sweet and it'll be fine. I think the suggestion above to just swap weapons every 10 levels or so is pretty good, actually.

@OP Your GL is a fool. Once you've 5 BoA's on a toon, you're set. The rest of the slots you can suppliment with either "of the ____" clear through to Northrend or just go with quest items.
You're fine. Don't worry about it. Save the 6k for the end game items you have to get. (EFM, BoA CWF, etc).

I've leveled a ton of alts with heirloom items and I use the AH....but I don't make special trips there.
Head back to a city to train....quick check the AH. Then back at it.
I'll blow a few gold....but rarely if ever buy blues...just greens to keep up with my level of whatever my toon is.
Having a ton of alts helps with cash flow...so 30-50g over 20-30-40 levels is nothing. Also...I have 450/450 in all professions...so I don't have to buy much...just send stuff to the alts from other alts after crafting it :)

I normally spend 10G every 5 levels on upgrades and if i get something worth the trouble i will enchant it to last me for even longer.

"Hey, a mace thats Of the Boar! Except, its 200 gold. Same with the other ones. Damnit."
That about sums up my experience for AH'ing gear.

It really depends on what your GL means.
Is he talking about gear you need for leveling? If so, forget that noise. But if he's talking about getting a few items to better heal for an instance, or for competitive survivability in a BG, then he might be right.
I always check the AH for gear leveling up. But I haven't used BoA gear yet. Yeah, some of the prices are pretty outrageous. It's nice to have a bank toon where I can just browse through the available items while doing my other transactions. I usually try to get nice discounted blues that last a few levels. And yeah, that pretty much stops as soon as I hit Outland.

In the time it takes you to shop at the AH and find an item that is an upgrade, you could have been questing and outleveled that very same item.
Even before heirloom items, the only thing you really needed to keep track of was melee weapons for melee classes and a wand for priests. Leveling is too fast to worry about items.
