As a hunter, drop Herbalism for Engineering?

Engineering does have many benefits, and fun items.
As a hunter making your own ammo could be a huge bonus. If you don't need herbalism, and don't feel like leveling another profession would be better/more enjoyable then go for it! If you have a JC already, profit is probably not as high on the priority list for you, so picking a profession for the fun factor makes sense.
If you decide against engineering, some other useful professions using the gathering skills you have:
Alchemy - you could farm herbs for a while before dropping herbalism, then powerlevel it, however depending on the price of frost lotus on your server it might be expensive to use at max level, or it might not.
Inscription - again, you may want to farm a lot of herbs to mill before dropping herbalism. At max level it is extremely easy to get pigments and inks, because any NR herbs mill into useful pigments, and the ink trader in Dal trades for every level of ink. The shoulder enchants are better than Sons of Hodir ones with no rep grind. If you wanted to put inscription to work, you CAN turn a good profit with it, and having access to a full book of glyphs can be very handy.
Enchanting - fun to have, and you can just solo low level dungeons for items to DE, or use an auction addon to scan the AH for cheap mats or greens. Highly profitable from mid-level on through max level. Fun too, if you like the ability to DE and make stuff glow.

Now, I really don't know how the newer stuff works, so does the item that lets you look on the AH anywhere (Jeeves I guess?) expire, and you have to make another one? Or does it just have a cooldown? I'll have to look that up.
Snypir, those are all the things that were looking really good to me as a hunter. My hunter is also my mount and pet collecting character, so that makes even more sense. I'd love that bike, but the cost is scarily prohibitive...
You guys are really selling me on the Engineering, thank you again for all your advice.
Lots of engineers take it specifically FOR the usefulness in PvP. I don't PVP, so I can't speak from experience. I do love the parachute cloaks and speed boosts though.
You seem to have a misconception about our dear Jeeves.
Jeeves is a butler, who allows access to repair, reagents/ammo, and the engineer can access his/her bank. Jeeves is a permanent item, and once you have made him, he will always be there for you... when he is off his 1 hour cooldown. Raids often request Jeeves's presence during a raid, for restocking reagents or a quick repair on the spot. He is also helpful when out farming, as you can vendor items or put stuff in the bank from anywhere in the world.
The scrapbots made from saronite have a shorter CD, lower materials cost, but are used up on summoning. They sell limited stocks of reagents, and repair.
The AH for engineers is located in the engineer training shop in Dalaran. He looks similar to Jeeves, somewhat, but is permanent to Dalaran. There is currently no way to access an AH outside of a major city.
Hope this helps!

I dropped Herby for Engineering about 2 years ago and never looked back.. repair bots, jumper cables, cool flying mounts and now jeeves, AH in dal and wormholes to name a few.. engineers are the ultimate tinkerers and hunters make awesome engineers imho..
my only problem is not having a AH in dal on all my alts cause i always seem to run in to the engineering building when i'm on my alts ^_^
my only question is if the pyro-rockets are worth losing 20agi enchant

my only question is if the pyro-rockets are worth losing 20agi enchant
Pyro rocket offers 1654-2020 damage every 45 seconds. That's a free
41DPS
bonus (no global cooldown, instant, can be macroed in any shot). On top of that,
it can crit
... so it will do more than 40dps unless you have 0 cirt.
Much much better than 20 agi
. So far I'd say it's the best DPS enchant available.

It's very funny then that sites like wow-heroes.com give the pyro-rocket a "zero" rating as far as enchants go. It counts as a 'misenchanted item' for me on my wow-heroes.com or imba character queries
On my toon (signature) Pyro Rocket gets 15 points. Anyway it's not that hard to see that 41 free dps is a HUGE bonus, not to mention that having a good crit will make it even better.
