Ever played D&D?
This question is definitely dating oneself, as far as age goes. I remember AD&D, remember in the pre-internet era having to go to the very specialized gaming store to buy dice (d4 through d20), etc, I remember dungeon module S3 (I may be wrong on this, it was the crashed spaceship with all kinds of too cool loot). I do think some of the human element is totally lost in WoW, but these days getting a d&d game together, given the probable age and thus obligations of the likely suspects, is a rarity. What D&D could give and wow 99% of the time (geographic impossibility) will not, is real human contact.
I'm not so sure about this. Granted that it's a
much
different game, but they are still releasing new editions of D&D (I think 4.0 just came out a little over 6 months ago? Not certain).
D&D 4.0 has tailored its mechanics more toward the MMO crowd, with a new magic system that allows for use of spells on a much more regular basis than previously (sometimes the limit is once per combat, whereas before it was often what, once per day?) I'm sure that they're hoping to capitalize on the popularity of MMO
RPG
s. I'm not sure how successful they will be.
As an aside: I'm 29 years old, and we have a gaming group that gets together every weekend that consists of a 34-year old single guy, a 27-year old and his 31-year old girlfriend, a 32-year old married man, and my 28-year old roommate. We'll be alternating games starting this week; we had been running a Mutants and Masterminds game every weekend, but we'll be replacing it every other weekend with a Star Wars D20 game.*
*I'm playing a Squib. I warned them that if they made me play Star Wars I was going to try and play the most hyperactive, annoying race I could find, but even
I draw the line at Gungan
... ;)

RPers avoid the general ^&*!@#baggery of the rest of the population. They can be easy to point out, but the vast majority of them are a secluded group.
Trust me, someone who ends any sentence with "vent.lol" isn't going to be approached by a rp'er.
It's not a freakin religion or anything, few people have strict rules or enforce certain behavior. Most use it as a way to get into their character a bit more rather than use them as a virtual doll and hyperclick through the entire game.

Role Playing can be fun sometimes, but i'd much prefer to do it with people over a tabletop game than online.
playing D&D with friends is great, a lot of people i know are into it. Dark Heresy (40k) is more fun to RP in.
kill the mutant! burn the heretic! purge the unclean! FORWARD IN THE NAME OF THE EMPEROR!
