A seemingly common theme in movies...

Alright, so after having seen a few (to say the least) different movies over the past few years, I've begun to notice a rather common theme going on between the science fiction flicks: the end of the human species comes about because of our own doing. A few different examples that come to mind...
WALL•E
We essentially litter the planet to death. Eventually, due to the actions of the robot in question, the earth is saved, human beings go on the Atkins diet, and everything is fixed. Huzzah. <3
Battle for Terra
Though I can't really recall the specifics of this one, I do believe the idea was that after some seriously messed up wars, the human race went and essentially blew up our planet and all our colonies that they'd established, and then they set across the galaxy/unverse/etc. on a ship to the planet they'd designated as Terra. After a failed incursion due to human gone soft, the human race settles on the planet with the native inhabitants.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (Remake)
Basically, Keanu Reeves' character comes to wipe out the human species and everything else on the planet, because we're destroying it, and we need to be eliminated so the earth can survive. After some touching words from the lead female, Reeves decides to spare the planet, and we all (presumedly) change for the better, so as to avoid this from happening ever again.
There are, of course, countless others that share this theme.
But what do
you
think is ultimately gonna happen to the human species and the earth? Are we gonna go out in an awesome blaze of self-destruction, or are we gonna persist until the sun goes out in 4.5 to 5 billion years?
Side note:
Do you ever feel like the confirmation code before you make a new post seems like something you'd expect on the SAT's? Good lawd, srsly.

In my opinion, our race going out in a blaze of glory is just our hope...we refuse to believe that we will be destroyed by something that we do not have some measure of control over...
<hope>...I believe that we will have the technology to stop the sun from "going out" by the time it does go out. A few
billion
years is a loooong time to create such technology. </hope>
Edit: It will be more likely that we will settle in a habitable planet in a habitable solar system in that amount of time. We might even be able to terra-form several planets.

This will be the cause of the end of the human race. Those who disagree shall also be the first to die.

Well, given the fact that I'm a Baptist you can read Revelations in the KJV Bible to see what I believe.

You forgot The Day After Tomorrow!
Good movies though. We now have the technology to make explosions & destruction big enough to represent our Judgment Day, and what's scarier than the End of the Earth?
The only way we WON'T obliterate ourselves, is if aliens come in and give us a common enemy and we stop attacking each other to focus on the aliens. The other is some religion being correct, and it's Apocalypse happening and killing us all. I still vote we nuke ourselves in some WWIII-esque battle, or we deforest & pollute ourselves into extinction.

Either we'll wipe each other out or we'll expand into space and last a very long time as a species (unless we evolve...?). There is no way the end will be from a celestial object.

I think I'll take my chances..../disagree.

Well, it could be worse. We could find ourselves in battle with a living constellation who must be killed within one hour to prevent him from sending a message to reroll the Earth.

Well it seems like most of these movies present mankind as a dirty, ignorant race who destroys the earth through pollution. I guess maybe the day the earth stood still reference man's hate and mistreatment of each other, but it still seemed more to focus on pollution and "destroying the earth."
Personally I think that's stupid. We're not going to destroy the earth with industry or pollution. Sure there's a lot more we could/should do right now for a green earth, but technology is getting better every day and the earth is very resilient. So as far as us ending our race that way, I don't see it happening.
Now nuclear war, I could very well see that happening and the fallout making the world unlivable for us.
What will happen? Who knows, I think either nuclear war in the next 500 years or however long it takes to develop technology to defend against it or avoid it, an asteroid hits sometime in the next 100,000 years or jesus comes back before then.

No species exists for more than... what? 2 million years? We'd probably be extinct by then... in any case I don't understand why you would want the human race to survive for that long. Who cares? It's in 2 billion years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark
Evidence for the existence of sharks extends back over 450–420 million years
But the end of the human species isn't necessarily two million years away. It could be as little as a year away, and as many as billions and billions.
In the end, 's just a thread asking for insight.
