Yes, there is, dear dilettante.
3 simple rules.
1. You only need AV software if you don't know how to properly use your PC. This, however, applies to 99% of all people.
2. No free AV is ever as good as a paid one. It still is better than nothing, however.
3. Most detection engines are very much alike. The difference between different programs is in handling and intrusiveness.
As for free AV software, i recommend either
AntiVir
or
Avast
.
If you were to use a non-free solution, which i must recommend you do, be it by paying for it, or "aquiring" it by other means, i recommend
ESET NOD32
. It does a good job, and at the same times uses very little system ressources.

I have to argue with your first rule. Because, even if you know what your doing, that in no way protects your machine. If you use any media (floppy's, CD/DVD, USB, internet) you run the risk of getting a virus (in '96 or '97 I actually got a virus via floppy... didn't have internet yet)
