I use ShockAndAwe. It does more than just watch maelstrom weapon procs, it shows cool down times and you can set spell priorities to display what you should use when. By default it also makes a "Pow" sound when you get 5 stacks. It's also very configurable and easy to use =P

I'd suggest either ShockAndAwe or Power Auras. Those are the two I've found to be the best. ShockAndAwe displays many extra things and when you reach 5 stacks it displays it very clearly. I found that it looked very clunky with all the bars on my screen and even when disabling the bars I didn't need I still didn't like the look.
Power Auras on the other hand is customizable to show whatever you would like. It's easy to use once you get the hang of it and it got rid of a lot of the clutter on my screen.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned TotemTimers. It tracks Maelstrom Weapon stacks rather nicely. It's basically a "Simon Says" addon for enhancement shamans.

What you described was pretty much exactly what Event Alert does. A little box pops up, and you can set it so that the sides of the screen flash red. It also does pretty much every major proc for other classes. I originally got it to alert me to Brain Freeze procs on my mage.

Does ShockAndAwe overwrite OminCC on the CDs?
ShockAndAwe displays bars on your screen that start off long and shrink to nothing as the spell cools down. OmniCC will still count down on your spell icon.
