Hi all.
I have been bored with WoW for a while, not really knowing what to do except dailies and levelling my warlock. Now I have something to keep me entertained for a while and I hope it will do the same for you over the next couple of weeks.
See, I decided to follow in the steps of Gutrot, the Troll Warrior that levelled naked. Except, I'm already 80 on my character, so I won't bore you with yet another "naked" story. Instead, I decided to strip my priest of all his gear, all his items, all the money and start all over. Working my way from naked to Fully Heroic Geared (Northrend heroic instances). With no help from friends or quests or whatever, for the first part of this experiment.
I've made a blog about it, since I tend to write a lot when I get started, so I hope you'll take a few minutes to give it a read and then come back and see how things are going. I'll be updating this post after each day of experimenting :-)
Gearing Up
Day 1 sees me starting from scratch and takes me from The Deadmines to Zul'Farrak.
Day 2 revolves around Maraudon and Blackrock Depths.
Day 3 and I am finally in Outlands, wheee :-D

As a caster it's easier due to just using spells.
Not quite true, as I found out. Since I'm casting level 80 spells and have very little extra Intellect or Spirit, my mana pool is very low compared to what each spell cost. And my regen is barely noticeable. So I am OOM pretty fast, where a warrior can keep doing his strikes as long as there is rage.
Try a warrior. They are harder because so many moves are AP dependant
I've never liked the warrior class. My first ever character in WoW was a warrior and I didn't last long enough for the trial to run out. And I don't have one now, so it's not an option ;) And as I said, warriors "just" need rage to do their thing. When specced properly, you almost never run out of rage, where a caster needs more time to regen mana for a single spell.
The alternatives to the priest, was my bear-specced druid and my Unholy death knight. I figured both would be too easy, as the bear can take a lot of punishment as well as heal when needed, never really thinking about mana, due to the mana gained from
Improved Leader of the Pack
.The DK would only be a challenge until I found a weapon. The different strikes do set amount of damages, even with no additional attack power, and a crappy grey would be all I needed to become too powerful.
So the priest was the obvious choice.
Try doing AV for 3 evenings, and then buy 2-3 pieces of Deadly Gladiators
I did actually consider allowing myself to use rings, trinkets and amulets. You know, stuff that is never actually shown. But nah, that would be cheating more than I already had, with the bags and hearthstone. If this account really got hacked, I bet not even my bags would survive and if the thief was cruel, he would set my stone to some remote location where it would take a long time to get back to civilization...

I'd be really surprised if it took more than a few days to be getting emblems of heroism.
I wouldn't. You see, I've recently levelled a warlock through outlands. I rarely got a group to an instance with that character. Not because there were too many DPS looking for group, but because hardly anyone were. So while I allow myself to do instances with others in Outlands, I have my doubt about actually getting a group. Sure, me being 80 will attract some people, but once they see my gear and I tell them that I am actually going to Need on stuff, they will probably say NOWAI and I'll be stuck doing nothing.
But I can see that you haven't read the rules of this experiment. I am not allowed to buy gear from AH. If I did that, this would be far too easy and I could skip all of Outlands. So that's a big hurdle right there, getting past Outlands. Once I reach Northrend, it will be far easier to get a group. And people won't think much of my gear being from lowbie instances. Or me Needing on stuff. I know, already thought of that. The real challenge lies in doing Azeroth alone and getting groups in Outlands...

Honestly?
This story bores me, because the idea of doing this myself bores me.
Good luck with it, I hope you have fun, I just know I wouldn't.

After a break doing other stuff, Day 4 is finally posted.
Been playing other games and I talk a bit more about that than Gearing Up in todays post, but I'll be back next week with a proper post ;-)
Garly, I admit, I would think like that myself and that is why I prefer to be shadow for this. It doesn't hurt as much that a DPS have a lot of downtime, as it would with the healer. I even touched that subject at the end of Day 3, because I had those thoughts too. Only once have I met that kind of attitude and that was with the last group of Day 3. But it was to be expected eventually...
