It is very possible if you can make the time for it. It's just like leveling multiple alts except you need to have an exact plan for what you want to do, not just "pick up whatever quests you can and grind."
My GM is gearing three 80's atm.

I have a level 80 druid and a level 80 hunter that are pretty geared. Back in BC, I decked out the druid and a mage at about the same time.
It isn't that difficult if you put aside time for it.
OS, VoA and Maly can all be done in a single day, given that you can find a group. You can even complete them on both characters rather easily if you know enough people or your server is heavily populated with people looking to get the content. Naxx, 10 or 25, can also be cleared in a couple hours of a single day if the group you run with is geared enough.
It might be a little tough to get both characters geared simultaneously but if you put in the time, you will see a return on the investment.

Yup, I do guild runs with my shaman and after the guild has run it I pug it on my DK for most content. Because the DK pugs she rarely clears things like Naxx 25 and only gets FL in Ulduar, but it's still some gearing up/achievements which will mean the char is better geared should my guild ever actually need another DK (unlikely but ya never know). I'm also going to do the same on my priest at 80 just for MC on naxx 25 as my guild needs one and I can switch in/out for the one encounter.

I have three 80s and all raid to some degree or another. The Warrior Tank is my main and is in the Tue-Thur 25 man Ulduar and a Thur (and pickup end whenever) 10 man Ulduar every week. The Druid Healer and The Warlock just pick up raids whenever. My guild does an "alt" Naxx 25 on Saturdays that I usually take one of the other two to.
The tank is far and away the best geared with a nice smattering of Ulduar 10 and 25 pieces. The Healer is pretty much decked in Naxx 25 gear, with a semi-solid Boomkin set as well. The Warlock is just getting there, I'm in all epics but only 4 pieces of 213 gear.
