From my knowledge all pets without talents/abilities have close to the same dps therefore it depends on what kind of pet you like, and what kind of pet (tenacity, cunning, and ferocity) would best suit your playstyle.
Each pet also has a special ability that should be taken into consideration also. If i were to level as BM i would personally pick a bear, in pvp (as a survival hunter) i would pick a crab for its 4 second immobilizing effect and i prefer the tenacity spec list as opposed to the other 2 for pvp

Devilsaurs for BM. Wolves for everyone else. Bears for solo and crabs for pvp.

DPS/Instance/Raid:
BM- Devilsaur
Other- Wolf
Solo/Questing:
BM- Bear
Other- Bear
PvP:
BM- Sithilid
Other- Hyena/Crab/Spider/Ravenger
Those are the "best" you can pick which ever pet you like to bring. Yes, even a Tallstrider.

There is no difference between Cat A/Spider A and Cat B/Spider B other then their look. SO for any pet type you get it's about what looks good to you.
THIS

For Cats I prefer
