I would never try and level as a arcane (err again). People say go fire or frost, fire for high damage and frost for survivability. I personally loved the frost tree, done right you will live and able to grind several mobs at once.

Going Arcane to level at 40 is a
very
bad idea.
At the least, I would suggest you level Arcane at 64, since you get Arcane Blast at that time.

umm.... how about frost is better for leveling from 1 to 80 lol
i definitely get it, how people want to be the epic dps class, and noone wants to be frost cuz its low end dps, so hell-- ill blow the $%^&ers away before they even GET to me. which works. until you accidentally aggro a mob you didnt mean to. or theres a link. or you oom on accident (it happens lol)
really and truly, if youre not leveling as frost, youre a beat (or two) behind, because its really just so much easier and quicker. i was having dps issues in northrend, until i realized that i was still using my rank 7 frostbolt on accident-- but really and truly, with frost, i can blow anything away that comes to me-- frostbolt crit for 2k and some change, get off another two or so, then nova, and ice lance. and its dead lol i promise you wont be lacking for deeps as frost while leveling.
5 mans too-- with all of the talents that beef up blizzard, i literally would doublew or triple everyone else's dps, just because i was aoeing so hard.

still dont ever recomend it lol but im new to wow-- not even paid my second months subscription yet :P maybe im missing something here, some epic ass merit that arcane has over frost for leveling, but personally, one corpse drag is annoying. and as arcane you'll be corpse dragging over and over

bleh whatever dant. if he starts now and likes it he will be that much better with arcane when he reaches higher levels because he will have went through 10-20 levels as arcane.

I've recently dual-specced into Arcane and it's a piece-o-%^&*. Spent the whole way from 1-80 as Frost and I've had little problems adapting between the two. I'm really tired of seeing this weak arguement that you have to spend half your character's lifespan practising to get some common sense and a good rotation down. It's nub grub.
Go Frost and stay that way until 80 at the very least. You'll thank yourself later.

i leveled a frosty from 1-72 and a arcane 1-80 and i like arcane thats why it ended up at 80 first. not many people can say that so whatever, you dont appreciate it fine go screw with your frost mage. everyone has their preference, why tell someone not to go arcane when they havent even tried it? this board is frost biased and has been forever. you guys give false information to everyone who inquires about arcane. you all make like a arcane mage doesnt have frost nova or cc...when i accidentally aggro mobs when leveling i can still frost nova or blizzard and blow them away with more firepower.
Jixer, it's not solely about preference. Sure, the OP COULD level from 40+ as Arcane but considering levelling a mage is a chronic headache as it is, most people here are only RECOMMENDING he/she roll frost until a later point to save drama. There simply is no real advantage to rolling Arcane until you at least pick up Slow or Arcane Blast.
