Pet Health & mounting/flight paths

Sometimes, when I unmount, or get off a flight path, my pet has substantially less health than when I mounted or got on the flight path. It usually seems like 50% less, though I don't know if it's exactly 50%.
What controls this and why does it happen? It's really annoying to be chasing down something mounted, unmount and sick the pet on the mob, only to find he's down 50% from the start. If it's a rare elite or something, that can often equal failure.
Any ideas?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
At least I'm not the only one seeing this! :)

I think its due to of bonus stamina from your gear which isnt calculated while pet is out. Once pets get back up it suddenly has bigger stamina and therefore higher max hp.
