I was a bit confused, because I thought they mean free World of Warcraft realms. Very strange to advertise this on a World of Warcraft website. xD

This. Those ads aren't picked out by hand, they're selected automatically by ad networks according to our site's demographics, just like mentioned here. Free Realms just went live, it's likely that we're going to see a LOT of Free Realms ads on MMO related sites, not just ours.
