I personally like my mage very much but in your position it seems a shaman would fit your hopes.
They are great caster dps's, very wanted in raids and if you get a bit bored, you could switch specs to resto. This would make you even more desired as a healer.
Good luck with whatever you choose. :)

The only warlocks that are truly dependent on their pets are demo locks. Aff/Destro locks - pets are considered as more of an extra "dot". Early levels, you are a bit dependent on the old voidy, but in your 30's as affliction spec, the whole playstyle changes.

I play Horde and I would definitely choose a Troll shaman, now you could go to Ghostlands and you're right, it would be a pain to train skills.
I recommend go ol' Durotar to the Barrens instead.

Ive been thinking and its down to a shaman, druid, mage or warlock
My personal take of those 4 casters:
Elemental shaman is mostly two spells until you get to 75. Lightning Bolt (lb) and Earth Shock (es). You'll be doing a lot of lb, lb, es, lb, lb, es.... Once you hit 75 you get Lava Burst and it really adds to the game play. Now I do Lightning Bolt x2, Flame Shock, Lava Burst, Earth Shock and another Lightning bolt if the mob is still standing..
Elemental Shammy is fun in instances, but soloing is an annoying two button spam most of the way.
Balance druid is a lot more fun, and works fine even before the moonkin form. Don't be afraid to use cloth gear with +spellpower right from the first levels. You get Wrath, Moonfire, Starfire and Insect Swarm rather early and with Entangling Roots it allows you a variated playing style. Once you get moonkin form you can choose to just tank the mobs while you kill them rather than locking them in place with roots.
Warlock can be fun too. I like affliction, it's fun to take down 5-6 mobs at the same time, life tapping to keep your mana up and draining to keep a full health bar too. Regarding the pet dependence it's all up to you. Some locks like sending in the pet to take care of things, while they stand in the background and use a wand. Personally I only use my pet as a buff, drain-tanking and fear-tanking is fun. Warlocks has great survivability too, if played right you'll never need a healer.
Mage is not really me. They have a huge array of spells, which is fun, and aoe grinding is fun too, but they are too fragile for my taste. Fun in instance, but I'm no good solo playing with them..
My vote goes to either moonkin or warlock, but if you feel stronger for one of the other go with what your heart desires.. For pvp'ing, I would say that a warlock with a felhunter is a tough fight any day of the week.

Ive been playing about a month now and have been doing the melee classes, warrior and paladin.
Well that's your whole problem right there! You haven't played a rogue.
