So what is the point then in getting a lot of mana? The more mana I have the more mana my abilites cost, which means biiiig manapool isnt really worth anything besides maybe if I have Careful Aim. In fact it could might be a bad thing, because it will just take longer to regain that much mana!
Base mana =/= total mana.
If a spell's cost is based on a percent of base mana, increasing your total mana doesn't affect that cost.
Base mana, IIRC, is based on class and level, so getting Intellect to increase your mana pool
is
good. The more total mana you have, the more abilities you can use before having to resort to Viper.

As an aside, I've been adding Mp5 to my gear (putting a lot of AP/mp5 gems in blue sockets, for example), and it seems to be helping. I very rarely have to switch to Viper even during long 5-10 minute boss battles.
Usually, you're better off with more agility and using Viper briefly when necessary. The EJ hunter spreadsheet will give you a more exact answer than this simple guideline, of course.
I do have one +agi/+mp5 gem to meet my meta requirement, mostly because there weren't any +agi/+stam gems and the 4 AP from stamina doesn't matter enough to bother with.
Stacking mp5 is a whole different issue though. You lose a lot of agility/AP to get a very small amount of mp5. Remember that Blessing of Wisdom is 91 mp5 (shaman totems similar), and Judgment of Wisdom is like an epic fountain of mana.
We have incredible mana regen with AotV---a few seconds in Viper will restore half of your mana easily. There is no point in gimping overall DPS to avoid a brief switch to Viper.
