Better DPS on trash than on bosses

Here I am, most casual of casual players; and here we are, the most casual of casual guilds.
I have never been much of a raider, I have just been in few instances here and there. My gear is starting to show its age, and the few epic pieces I have are crafted (I tell a lie, I have one purple ring that dropped in heroic Utgarte Keep).
Recently, I have been getting myself into more dungeons - attempting few in heroic mode, with the help of guild members. I even installed the add-on Recount, to try and figure out how to improve my DPS a bit. Did I mention I play a Warlock (Felguard/Ember)?
The lengthy introduction brings me, finally, to my observation and my question.
Last night - in Utgarte Pinnacle (Heroic) - I noticed the strangest thing. The DPS of the whole group was consistently higher on trash mobs than on bosses. For example, I observed my DPS to be slightly over 2,000 on trash, and approximately 1,800 on bosses.
As far as I my "rotation" is concerned... it is quite simple and quite standard - Curse of Agony, Corruption, Immolate, Incinerate spam - refresh dots and repeat. I try not to clip my dots (I can't say I always succeed).
But I am looking at the group's performance: why would our DPS be higher on trash? I was under the impression we should do better on bosses. Or is this normal?
Thank you all, in advance, for any explanation or suggestion.
OldManGeorge.

I hit 19.8k DPS on a trashgroup.
Needless to say, I only reach around 5k on regular bosses.
(raiding, of course)

I guess the trash also has lower defence compared to the bosses, meaning that more damage gets through
^This. Elaborating a bit more, trash in heroics are 80-81 elites and will have appropriate defensive skill and spell resistances. Heroic bosses are 82 elites, so your attacks and spells will
miss
more often. The same holds true for raid bosses at lvl 83. Take a look at
this
article on spell hit and notice how much more +hit you need to not miss with spells on an 83 mob vs 82, and 82 vs 81.
Trash dps also tends to be higher due to AoE abilities, but I took your example because you didn't include any AoE in your particular rotation.

aoes. believe it or not, you do more damage to 8 people than to 1 person.

Interest
multiple targets = aoe = infalted dps
Boss = 1 target (usually)
This.
Also, people change out of hit rating-laced gear for stronger dps gear sometimes on trash.
