I thought it would be a nice idea if they opened up something along the lines of a donation/subscription system.
There has been some internal discussion about this for some time. I don't know the status, but I agree, its a good idea.

If you think that this is bad, wait till Blizzard comes down on all of the mod writers after they start enforcing the new policy of not asking for donations or mod writers charging for their work in making wow a better game....
Nitpicking. Mods will be free of charge. Mod writers can still ask for donation, but they cannot do it on the mod itself (when mod start, or in the info tab/windows/whatever). They can do it on the site where you can download the mod, for example.
This is extremely offtopic, but I actually believe the problem is a legal issue. You are asking for donations inside a product that requires a subscription to use. I'm not a lawyer, but I can understand that might cause issues legally.

There's no explaining one's way out of poor decisions like this. Damage has already been done. The best thing to do is to humbly remove the ad as soon as possible, and make efforts to find a better way to balance the books.

I work in the advertising industry. I'll give you a little insight on what is going on right now in the industry. I am not talking specifically about wowhead, but rather about all online advertising in general.
I work in the web design industry, and I'll give you a little insight on what has been a rule of thumb for good web designers since the death of pop-ups. I'm not talking about gaming sites in particular, but about ad placement in general.
Banners? Go ahead! YouTube like blocks of ads on the side? Sure thing! Giant Skin that completely covers the home page? No can do. Giant invisible link covering all the "white space" that a site normally employs? Bad idea. Giant invisible link covering every little crag in the text of your NAVIGATION? Website Suicide. What is happening here is plain and simple bad web design.
I would say that a majority of WoW players do not play, plan on playing or, if they have played it before, enjoy WAR. Advertising for it here is like Satellite TV Ads on Cable channels. Like advertisement for Disney shows on Nickelodeon. Its just silly.
Oh well, I guess desperate times call for desperate solutions? I don't even know why I am
bitching
whining, my Firefox addons make it so this doesn't even affect me... I guess it just frustrates me that a site that I saw as professional would stoop this low for $$$. But hey, its all about the Benjamins Baby. No matter what wowhead does, whether its a smart move or a dumb move, millions of people will still visit it every day... Myself included.

I'm sort of indifferent about the add. On one had, yes its a bit too "in your face" and totally goes against Wowhead's general theme of sleekness and utility. On the other, they do need to make money and I don't blame them. Do I personally like it? No, of course not. It makes me wonder as well, wouldn't that add be a conflict of interest? Wouldn't the wowhead team want to promote the playing of Wow and not other online games? Is the wowhead team going to produce a sister site for warhammer?
It wouldn't be very productive to have a WoW ad on this site seeing as how there is probably close to 0% of people who come to this site that DONT play WoW.
I hate doing this but..
I didn't explicitly say Wowhead should advertise wow on their site. I was pointing out how I thought it would be a conflict of interest to advertise their Cash Cow's competitor. Just like you , I play wow and use this site and understand what it does. On a side note, I've actually seen plenty of Wow advertisements by blizzard on Wowhead.

People that complained are #$%^ing retarded. Nobody that uses wowhead.com for free even has a right to open their mouth about what the site does, if they do they should go unheard. I saw this the second it happened (4 AM?) and I thought it was an extremely smart advertisement method. I guarantee they will make more off the advertisement than what they paid for it regardless of how small or large the profit; I won't go over the dozens of reasons why, it should be self explanatory. Just to reiterate, wowhead.com could become a Hello Kitty site and there is very little a free user (just about everyone) could say or do about it to make a difference. Sorry that your free information isn't catering to you leach of a user.
None of this changes the fact that wowhead is easily the best WoW database on the net; going anywhere else would only be crippling yourself. If your decision on which DB to use consists of a front page advertisement keeping the site alive, you are a pseudo-rebel with horribly bad taste.

Are you familiar with the term "Conflict of Interest?"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_of_interest
A conflict of interest occurs when an individual or organization ... has an interest that might compromise their reliability. A conflict of interest exists even if no improper act results from it, and can create an appearance of impropriety that can undermine confidence in the conflicted individual or organization.
Wait, what?
Are you suggesting that wowhead has an interesting in taking users away from wow? xD

So how much do we have to pay you to get rid of this &*!@ ad?
edit:
Folks, solution:
1. Use Firefox.
2. Use Adblock.
3. Use filter:

Was just about to post this, well done. Keep in mind you can still accidentally click the (now invisible) links, but at least you won't see the image.
