Necrosis: I don't take it you got me mixed up with tomtoms although I did find it interesting that you said it procs on rune strike. Is that true, because if it is, that changes my thinking a little on that talent.
Everything ive seen or read at places like elitistjerks and tankspot say that necrosis and bcb do not proc off of rune strike, only auto attacks. And since a majority of your auto attacks are converted into rune strikes it makes these talents virtually useless for tanks.
I also tend to change my mind from day to day about what to do in 3.1, but currently this is what im settling in on:
http://ptr.wowhead.com/?talent=j0EMZ0xZfghI0bkgh0Rfout
Some things im sure people will disagree with:
imp icy touch: I noticed that if your dps spec, and you go anywhere down the frost tree, this will be a mandatory talent for you. Chances are in a 25man raid, i'm going to have at least 1 other dps DK in the raid that will likely have this talent. That added to the fact that i feel its a minor mitigation talent lead me to skip it
Desecration: i just do not like the static nature of this ability. I don't care how many attacks they link its proc to. It makes me want to stand still, which in a crunch could cause me to delay a move by a fraction of a second or more, which i could see causing a wipe. Maybe im just paranoid, but i just don't like this talent the way it is. If it were an aura like UB, then id take it in a heartbeat.
DPS talents: im sure people will pick out a few dps talents that don't help at all with Threat generation. Like master of ghouls, summon gargoyle, and night of the dead. Its true they don't add any tanking capability whatsoever, but i have found that there are numerous times when there are too many tanks in the raid for a specific encounter and i am thus asked to put on dps gear and change to blood presence to help dps.
OaPH: i realize its useless for tanking, but this is a game and this one talent gives me more "fun" than any other talent at my discretion. Also the stun/fear reduction is helpful somewhat in tanking.
Imp Unholy Presence: the same reason i hate desecration is the same reason i love this talent. Also it lets me put the pure stam enchant on my boots instead of the one with movement speed increase. So it does indirectly help my tanking stats.
Reaping: Ive had this talent, and i don't see the benefit. I time all my runes uses like it was the D-Day invasion. I know exactly what to hit at what time to give me the effect i want. The only thing i noticed this talent did for me was muddle up my expected rune cool downs. Maybe for someone who isnt so strict with their rotation or isn't so good at tanking may like the versatility, but for me it just makes it harder to do my job.

Sorry for thread necromancy, but i figured this fit here, instead of creating my own thread.
This would be my core build with 4 points leftover.
12/5/50
Candidates for remaining 4 points:
- 2/2 Dirge, 2/2 Unholy Presence
- Gargoyle, 2/2 Dirge, 1/3 Virulence
- Gargoyle, 2/2 Dirge, Ghoul Frenzy (Looks crap, TBH)
- Gargoyle, 3/3 Virulence
- 2/2 Dirge, 2/2 Icy Reach

It's really really good IMO, but i don't have the points to spare for it.
EDIT: WAIT WHAT, REAPING NO LONGER AFFECTS BLOOD BOIL?
There goes my plans for 21 second diseases and Double Blood Boils... --;

have anyone considered Black ice?
5/5 tooltip: "increases your frost AND shadow damage by 10%"
thoughts?
I have actually. Almost all my damage as an unholy tank is shadow based. D&D, Blood Plague, Scourge Strike, Unholy Blight. Hell even auto-attacks/runestrike would get a small boost from it since im spec'd into necrosis.
This is what im thinking for 3.1 as it stands now:
10/10/51
D&D is by far your best TPS ability as an unholy tank, especially if glyphed into it, even on just a single target. I figure any ability that boosts this is worth it.

Hello, new poster here, was reading up on a lot of the discussion that has been taking place. Currently I tank Sarth 3D and am a MT in my guild as an Unholy Dk. Was just curious if there was any tweaking you guys would do with this spec I was going to venture into once 3.1 hits... hopefully in 2 weeks so I can get my achievements done. BlackProto ftw :D

let me know what you guys think.
Only real mistake i see is 3/3 wandering plague. There are other talents i would personaly choose not to take but are more personal preference. You could take those 3 points, put 2 in dirge and 1 to finish out desecration. Or put points into necrosis to increase rune strike damage.

God, I really hate to seem like the guy that's bashing on you, for it seems I have two posts in a row. I wanna let you know I have nothing against you, I argue to figure things out and get people to discuss things intellectually.
No worries, i do the same thing.
As I said in your discussion about the viability of Reaping, you yourself said here (above) that Necrosis will not proc off anything but an auto attack,
I was wrong, it does effect runestrike. There you see? I can admit that :P
This rumor is from beta where at the time it was bugged and did not, and then people began to think it was "working as intended". Then it was fixed, so now it does effect runestrike. BCB also procs off runestrike. But i dont like BCB since its just a secondary attack, it doesnt buff any other attack like necrosis does for runestrike.
In many cases a raid may not have a frost DK to provide Improved Icy Touch.
I've noticed almost all DPS DK's also have it. Blood have it to get to annihilation, and i feel will still have it in 3.1. Frost DPS (i know, but they do exist) also have it. As well as frost tanks. Also since black ice does 10% frost/shadow in 3.1 i think even unholy dps dk's will be taking imp icy touch to get that. So you see, it really is just about everyone else that isnt an unholy tank.
I dont see where you disagree with me though...

Here's something I've been pondering about:
My current Glyphs for Unholy tanking have been:
Glyph of the Ghoul (The Ghoul is there to die for me so it may as well do some decent DPS while it's up)
Glyph of Death and Decay
Glyph of Bone Shield
Now I'm going to be specced for 21 second diseases here, so can anyone tell me if it will be a waste to replace Death and Decay with Disease (or hell, maybe even Ghoul).
The way i refresh diseases now is to bounce it off the current kill order mob (since it's going to die next) or if there's no kill order since i was denied leader, the one with the lowest health. If DnD is off CD, I cast that next, otherwise i bounce it off another mob and cast DnD next rotation. EDIT: With 3.1 i think i will spend that rune on Blood Boil instead.
In this case I would think that Glyph of Disease may not even be that useful.
