When attacking from the front, use Mangle. Only ever use Mangle. Yes, Mangle is better than even a Mangle-buffed Rake. Yes, that makes Rake obsolete for PVE soloing. Yes, Mangle is better than Claw in every way.
I find having a rake and a rip up on mobs that run is very useful for solo play.

Under 50, before you have mangle, yes. Otherwise no. Mobs should be dead before they run.

Oh, there are other situations where having a DOT on a mob after level 50 is useful. Say I'm engaging 2 or 3 mobs, I'm on one until I know that Rip will kill it. I Rip, I change targets. It might start running, but it will die from the DOT.
Every ability has a situational use.
Well, everything but Claw. lol @ claw

Some mobs run at a quarter health, so having 2 dots is useful.
I use the exact same technique as pelf. Depending on how quick my Combo Point generation was, and how soon I ripped, many times I'll add a rake because the rip might wear off before they die. If anyone hasn't learned the rip and tab targets technique, it's a great one for one on two scenarios, and adding a rake on to one of them and tabbing is a great way to take them BOTH down faster.
Of course, I'm the type of person that's actually trying to make Tiger's Fury effective by increasing my AP/white damage... if I can ever get my AP high enough to actually make it viable.
@Claw: lol as well :P

It's very hard to not crit at least twice after applying the last rip with something like 55+ % to crit raid buffed in DPS gear. If you do, you're stuck waiting for the rip to tick off because it's a bad idea to just overwrite it.
So, what do you do? Shred again. Oops, now we're at 5pc. Still waiting for rip. Hrm, okay, refresh the mangle. Oh, one of those two abilities crit.
Cat crit gets very very high when you jam all that Agility together in one place. It's quite nice. Watch your aggro :).
@tejing: Yeah, I'm agreeing with you.

my combatcycle in catform for soloplay at lvl 63:
1. pounce
2. shred
3. shred,
4. rake if not at 5cp,
5. at 5cp maim
6. shred
7. shred
8. mob is dead ^^
no room for mangle.. too bad.. because mangle gives a nice debuff..
any way to upgrade my combat cycle?
Yeah, Mangle after pounce, then every shred does 30% more dmg.
If you're just soloing, it probably wont matter much, seeing as you'll be mangling them frontally, but since you say you have maim, no reason not to mangle after pounce to make your shreds hit harder.
Also, when you start your attack based on when your energy is ticking/being restored makes a difference between getting a Pounce, Mangle, 2+x Shred off or not.
Edit:
To add that if you wait to maim until you have about a fair chunck of energy, after you Maim, you'll still have some, then your energy ticks will bring your energy up to past 84. If you have 84 energy before Maim wears off, you can pull off two Shreds in a row.
Just adding this b/c for the longest time I couldn't figure out how I was getting 2 shreds to land after maim. OOC can proc the second shred as well.

Getting an add-on that shows the game ticks helps with timing things by a
huge
amount. It's built in to several of the unit frames. I also have EnergyWatch which is a little bar that can be configured to show up in various circumstances. I have it smack dab in the middle of my screen so I can see it without looking at it while I'm prowling around.
It helps time openers, finishers, and also powershifting.

5/5 Ferocity – anything that reduces the cost of Mangle (and, until you get Mangle, Claw and
Shred
) means more DPS.
I think you mean Rake instead of Shred ;) Anyway, just the thought of cheaper Shreds made me shiver :P
Oh and you should edit that part about non-bleeding mobs, as of 2.4 every mob can bleed.

we do get cheaper shreds XD. The base energy cost is 60 energy. with talents we get it down to 42 energy

Enough to equal 9% hit chance if you're raiding, otherwise 5-6% is fine.
142 hit rating is the cap for lvl 73 bosses
