gorefiend -
avoidance
regarding the 'not every raid is perfect' thing, that's fine but fora like this one are about discussing ideal situations and perfect rotations so that when things don't go to plan we're well equipped to do well regardless.
there's little point in planning to do badly just so that our dps doesn't drop when things don't go well in a raid.
@zuxia - this discussion meandered wildly as i tried to grasp what it was you were saying and it eventually turned out it was a boss/trash thing. however there also seemed to be a misunderstanding about dps and damage and their relationship.
here's an excellent post over at the warlock's den about it

quote from post at warlocks den:
Now I am typically #3 on damage but completely out of the top 10 for dps. It is not the dps that maters... it is the actual damage. And they do not go hand in hand unless you are a non-dot using warlock.
this is exactly why i wanted you to read this and i hope you read the whole thing.
you'll notice that they're not talking about boss/trash damage, only boss damage. you'll also notice that they're saying that _affliction_ suffers from having low dps but high damage, unlike destro builds which use more direct damage abilities giving high dps but not necessarily the damage.
this runs entirely counter to what you were saying. you were complaining that affliction always has the best dps but you do the best damage with a destro build. this is what led to the confusion because, as i said, "traditionally" affliction locks have trouble with dps.
it turned out the extra damage was from trash fights which is the other issue i think we eventually solved.

i find it really hard to care about chaos bolt and empowered imp, i think all those builds are weak at the moment, so i'm not sure why i'm getting involved but...
chaos bolt _does_ benefit from emberstorm and it's cast time is reduced by bane by .5 seconds (which is better than incinerate's cast time reduction in emberstorm)
immolate doesn't buff spells. think of it's connection to incinerate more like, without immo incinerate is broken... rather than immo buffs incinerate.
the thing with CB is that it _is_ good DPCT. it's much better than incinerate. this is a fact.
the problem with it is that it has a cooldown so, no, it's not a filler spell.
if you're taking FnB then you might as well get CB. personally i wouldn't take either, i don't see enough benefit from anything past SnF.
if you do get CB then you need to use it every time the cooldown is up

couple of things:
-firstly, i still don't care about chaos bolt. i just don't like fallacies being left on the board unchecked.
-it isn't a choice between incinerate and chaos bolt because you can't spam chaos bolt.
-none of the buffs to incinerate matter because chaos bolt's DPCT is higher than incinerate by a very large margin
-you throw a chaos bolt into your rotation every 12 seconds and your overall DPS goes up a little bit because you're getting more bang for your buck on a spell every 12 seconds.
an extreme example would be an free, instant soulfire every 12 seconds. for the global cooldown you'd get a ton of damage and every lock would put it in their rotation. this is a smaller version of the same idea.
they're my main points. a couple of niggling annoyances though:
-
shadowflame
is a spell.
shadow and flame
is a talent.
-shadow and flame tooltip =
"Your Shadow Bolt,
Chaos Bolt
and Incinerate spells gain an additional 20% of your bonus spell damage effects."
-immolate doesn't buff incinerate. immolate makes incinerate good enough to be worth casting.
-T7 tooltip =
"Your Corruption and Immolate periodic effects have a chance to increase the critical strike chance of your
next
Shadow Bolt or Incinerate by 10%."
you can only use your chaos bolt every 12 seconds so the rest of the time you'll be using incinerate and using this proc.
-i can keep my pets alive. if you can't then that's fine but you might need to consider the possibility that it's only you who kills pets.
like i say. i'm not advocating CB, i'm not a fan. just clearing up some errors.

Just looked at 3.0.8 patch notes! From wowhead, test-realms and curse. There is nothing on a chaosbolt improvement (cough). Infact we are seeing a better improve on conflagrate from emberstorm. Ritual of summoning is one portal summons all within 5mins, rock on. Drain mana now takes from base.
...and this relates to our discussion how? who said there was any mention of chaos bolt in the recent patch notes? ...erm... cough?
conflag is a bug fix, summoning is cool, drain mana is a nerf (not taking "from base", as you said, but taking a percentage). so what?
Don't fall off your trolley because then you won't be able to go shopping
i think i missed the shopping metaphor a few posts back.
