So the “soft cap” for raiding locks is;
Alliance (talented) = 262 hit rating
Correct me if my math is wrong but it looks like 262 hit rating gives +9.9878% hit, so you need 263 hit rating to be capped in your "Alliance (talented)" case.

Are we shooting for the untalented (although raid buffed) hit cap for Soulshatter, or do you think Soulshatter is less important now?

Spell Crit and Haste do not affect all of their spells, and one way or another an affliction warlock will have to choose between which relatively useless stat they will use. Spell haste for faster haunt/ua/shadow bolts, or crit for faster haunt/ua/shadowbolt/drain life.
Spell haste still affects their GCD. Shorting this time would all for more spam after they cast the dots. Also, the cast sequence could be more precise.
edited to remove a incorrect statement - dot cast speed AND dot cast time are both reduced by haste. this can be confirmed at both wowwiki and elitest jerks.

Just so the warlocks still in a craze about the new fel-armour buff who have decided to stack spirit (thus rolling need on my healing gear)...can you outline a scenario where such a warlock would be stunting themselves statwise?
Reason is, i know that all items have an allotted amount of points based on its iLevel and how much armour it gives, so surely a warlock that decides to stack spirit as a priority one stat will sacrifice other more important stats.

Just so the warlocks still in a craze about the new fel-armour buff who have decided to stack spirit I don't think any lock should stack spirit. It is a nice adition to an almost useless stat, that combined with the new lifetap equation, but as far as taking spirit over crit, hit, haste, or damage, thats just not a good idea. All this is in irharry's nice OP.
And on the issue of haste affecting DoTs duration, I'm pretty sure it doesn't. I haven't ever paid attention to it, but I do know it doesn't show it in the tooltip. Also I haven't seen any noticeable quickening in the duration.
I already voted for sticky, but I'll do it again.

I will try and confirm this tonight, and update my op to reflect it, but I believe that haste affects the speed that dots tick, but do not affect the GCD on instant cast dots. Watch this space!
Haste does affect GCD of dots. You can reduce the GCD to 1s with haste

so just curious, how much haste would a level 80 warlock need to stack to get the max benefit out of the GCD?

you need 32.8 haste rating per 1% of haste, and the maximum that the GCD can be reduced to is 1 second.
33.33*32.8 = 1093 haste.
In reality your cap is likely to be lower than this due to things like wrath of air totem.

you've pretty much summed it up perfecly, spirit is something we need, (more for life tapping than for the fel armor buff), but its simply not worth prioritising for the reasons you've given.
If you want an example, a while back I looked at dropping
these
for
these
. the bauble woven is supposedly a better item (it has a higher iLvL), but simply wasn't worth me taking because spirit isn't worth enough to me.

Been doing a lot of deep thinking about locks recently and came up with another reason why +HIT is so valuable: Pets
Two changes in WotlK:
Lock hit rating now increases pet hit rating
Raiding locks are now using their pet. Affliction wants the Felhunter to hit with shadow bite for mana regen, Destro wants Imp to hit for crit bonus via Empowered imp talent, and of course Demo want the FG to hit with everything.
Now this leads me back to something I have long held: Getting +HIT from gear is better than the lock talents that provide +HIT. I say this because, in addition to leaving some of your spells below hit cap, those talents will NOT boost your pet's chance to hit.

this is a VERY good point, thanks blightman. Added to the OP.

Melee attacks using a one-roll system was only accepted wisdom for white damage.
Melee instant specials (largely the domain of rogues) have been shown to both crit / block on the same attack and the same may also be true of "on next attack" specials.
I don't think the merging of melee / spell ratings is enough evidence to suggest spells now use a one-roll system.
Though as you can't dodge / parry / block a spell this is going to be much harder to prove conclusively than it is for melee.
