My wife wants to get into it for the art. I want to get into it because I like strategy games. Is there a deck out there that has fantastic art, featuring women? I'm thinking angels, or fairies or something... she likes unicorns and butterflies too... and candy dewdrop mornings... and puppies.
Like Funden said, clerics, but there also the Kitsune, which were fox people and there's angels and stuff too. I have an angel deck. Lots of really cool stuff there.

Damn, I want an angel deck now. That's always been a thing of mine.

Well, I'll do it for the art! And stack lots of mana >.> To be honest, M:TG has some really amazing artwork.
Honestly, I build my decks because I like them. I
will
try to make it so that I can win, but I may throw in cards that I might not use too much because I just like them. Angels are one of those things that I love, along with vampires, dwarves, clockwork/steampunk and Nordic stuff (and checker patterns. Now I want to draw a checkered angel, dammit).

I need to go track down some of my favorite flavor text. There were some good ones, mostly about goblins.
Here's what's probably my favorite: "Some have said there is no subtlety to destruction. You know what? They're dead"

I remember seeing Magic cards in Fred Meyers, about a year ago. I called over there to see if they had any. An elderly sounding woman named Betty answered the phone. Here's about how the phone conversation went:
Betty: Thank you for calling Fred Meyers, this is Betty. How can I help you?
Me: I'm looking for Magic: The Gathering Trading Card Game.
Betty: You are looking for what now?
Me: Magic: The Gathering. It is a card game.
Betty: It's a game?
Me: Yes, it is a trading card game.
Betty: Is it like Yahtzee?
Me: No.
Betty: Are they like playing cards more than Yahtzee?
Me: Yes.
Betty: I'll go take a look.
- a few minutes pass-
Betty: What age group is the game for?
Me: It's an adult game.
Betty: We don't carry adult or pornographic material at Fred Meyers.
Me: It's not an adult game like that. It is a game for adults.
Betty: Oh, I didn't know they had that.
Me: You don't play games?
Betty: No.
Me: Is there a nerd there I can talk to?
Betty: A what?
Me: Nevermind. Thanks for your help Betty.
Betty: Have a good day.

I might head over to Wal Mart and buy a starter deck. Those any good?

I tried calling Wal Mart, also. After three tries I discovered that my local Walmart DOES have the cards, but they couldn't tell me anything else cause they are too busy.

I think all towns have the obligatory small hobby/nerd/table-top shop. Mine looks like a sports-card shop from the front (in fact, it's called "Who's on First Sports Memorabilia", but inside is table after table of 12-year-olds playing Yu-Gi-Oh) -- you might want to look for something like that. Odds are they'll have a more thorough selection, proper pricing, and the guy behind the counter will probably know what he's talking about.
Personally, I'd suggest the "Fat Pack" -- last time I bought one was like 4 years back, but assuming they're still the same, it's a nice 'starter' set. It comes with enough cards (including land) for two people to play, and some goodies (a nice box, artsy card divider things depicting the block's main characters, a 20-sided die since you can never have enough of those, a rule book, and my favorite part, a novel telling the set's story).
I'll do a little research and see if this is still what's included.
Edit
: Here's what I was talking about. Looks like they no longer include the novel (or maybe these sets just don't have an associated novel), and you get a "Spindown life counter" instead of a 20-sided die.
MTG Core Set 2012 Fat Pack
Similar "fat packs" exist for other expansions, but I think this is the most recent one. A "core set" is a set of cards that contains cards from old expansions designed to be a stand-alone well-balanced set, so this is probably a good choice for a new player.
Edit2
: I found some conflicting information about how much land comes in a fat pack (80 would be good for 2 people, 40 might not be enough). But, the M12 core set also has five pre-built decks which would work well for a new player,
check out this link
for M12 products and prices. Pre-built decks are fully playable, include one booster, and are really cheap on this site (9 bucks).

The local store here is called "His Junk, Her Treasures". It looks like a junk store in the middle of a trailer park. I've driven by it before, and it looks like an absolute dump. I called in and they have everything I need for way cheap.

lol, yes the one here is a dump as well -- I suspect that's normal. Also the odor of the near-max-occupancy quantity of 12 year old kids is almost unbearable; beware. See above edit for fat pack info.

I downloaded MTGO today and I've been playing the "free mode" for the last hour. It's pretty fun =D

Haha, yep, another great one. Most of the best ones are from red cards.
Hell, most of the best ones are from Jaya.
