I thought you were uncrittable at 490 for mob level 72? I could be wrong. Anyway, an Arcane Protector crit me twice (to different ones) for over 10k each. If my def calculations are wrong someone tell me but I thought you couldn't be crit.

did you read the warrior tanking sticky guide? it has the answer to your question

Yes.
1) 490 Defense. This is a must, before stepping into any dungeon. It prevents you, under normal circumstances*, from being critically hit. Crits from monsters are Double damage. They can rapidly take a tank at moderate health down to dangerous levels. When followed by other critical hits, crushing blows, or special abilities, it can result in a dead tank before even the best healers can react. More then 490 defense is generally a waste. Mine currently sits at 512, but I’m looking for ways to reduce that in favor of stamina.
490.

you clearly didn't read it all:
*if a monster mind control’s a druid with Leader of the Pack, or receives some other type of buff that increases their critical hit chance above the base 5%,
you can still be crit, (example from Musluk)
You can also be Crit if you press a button hotkeyed to /sit, either “X” or “C”, so remove that keybinding
the buff referred here includes mob self buffs

I haven't been able to find proof yet, but perhaps when the Arcane Protector changes mode & starts pounding like crazy...well maybe his crit chance is increased. I'm not really sure how those mobs work, tbh.
EDIT
: Apparently, as far as I can find, it just increases melee damage & attack speed, not crit chance.
Otherwise, I could only think that maybe you were looking at defense rating instead of actual defense, but that didn't really make sense.
Also, did you check the combat log for the critical hit or just note the high damage?
-----
When a monster attacks you (the defender), their weapon skill is compared to your defense skill. Because the creatures available weapon skill is higher than your defense skill, he has an increased chance to obtain a critical strike. This is one of the basic concepts behind the 490 defense requirement.
All boss level monsters are level 73 elite; you must counter this naturally higher skill set by increasing your own defense skill.

I do not believe Arcane Protectors have any ability that increases their Crit (

) and we had a Balance Druid in and they don't MC anyway.

sorry, i should have been more specific
by self buffs i meant built in mechanics
When a monster attacks you (the defender), their weapon skill is compared to your defense skill. Because the creatures available weapon skill is higher than your defense skill, he has an increased chance to obtain a critical strike.
What hit you, it is well known that some mobs have higher then normal crit chance, debuffs can also play a factor as well.
and i think the warrior guide was severly changed, it used to mention something like this (or maybe i just saw it on another site and my mind clustered it together)
It has been postulated that you can't completely knock crits off the hit table, just reduce the chance to a very small amount.
also
special attacks can crit

Wait... I just noticed this...
You got crit for 10000+
that means that the regular hit are 5000.
No way those things hit that hard, not even
Curator
hits that hard. I'm pretty sure only end bosses of 10 man raids and bosses from 25 raids hit that hard on a regular hit.
The only possible explanation I can think of is that you were standing in their path during Fist of Stone, their special ability, where you're supposed to kite them around.
Even with Fist of Stone, I don't really see how it could have hit you for 5000 in the first place.

You can actually be critted if you have more than 490 Defense, its just a very very insignificant chance that you will.

No one's disputing the fact, except the Arcane Protector is a trash mob & it seems has no unusual crit chance...
I did hear the chance to be crit is still there, same with chance to miss, etc. - but isn't it estimated to be between 0.01% & 0.1%?
and it happened to him twice...=0

I read somewhere that it is impossible to be completely uncritable but reaching 490 defense reduces your chance to be hit by critical strike by 0.01 % or sumin like that so u may have just been unluky
Despite this ive nvr heard of those mobs hitting that hard
