Blizzard has been saying it was coming for a while now. Battle.net accounts are no less secure than your existing WoW account. I've been using one since the feature was available and had no issues.

The thing I liked about Battle.net was that I was able to put in my CD keys for Diablo and Diablo II and then download the games direct from Blizzard for free.
I lost some of the install discs, so it was nice to be able to get to play again without having to resort to illegal downloads.
Oh, and I merged my account with Battle.net as soon as it launched and haven't really had any issues with it.

It's only "illegal" if you don't own the games. The "legal" reason games can be downloaded from the internet is as "backups" for your "real" "copies" "of" "the" "game". Emphasis on the quotations.

This is actually not true, I have merged mine because I have to but Battle.net is less secure. The reason I say this is because before, someone had to obtain your wow logon id, which could be anything random that meets there guidelines. Now, all someone has to do is get your email address, because that is now your battle.net logon. You tell me, which is easier to get, you wow logon id or your email address?
And knowing the login ID helps them get the password to your account how? Unless you get a keylogger or some other type of trojan on your PC, your account is pretty safe either way unless you give someone both pieces of your login credentials or unless you have a stupid password like 12345 or something some idiot would put on their luggage.

So now if your computer winds up getting a keylogger on it because some dummy went to a bad website, they won't just get your blizzard account, they'll get your Email address.
According to the information, the accounts are supposed to have already been autocreated for us, but that doesn't appear to be true (tried, but Battle.net says my Email address has no associated account, and I never got the "Verify account" Email we were supposed to have gotten. (Yup, I checked my spamcans and filter folders...no sign of it.))

And yet, somehow, I got hacked and found a trojan after doing a quick virus scan. No idea how it got there.
If I was a hacker (I'm not) I'd hack one of the websites that "Popunder" the WOWhead website with certain ads and install it there. Since you don't actually BROWSE to that site yourself, you probably just close it without thinking. Whenever one of those pop under, do a full virus scan, just in case.
