since I thought it was a bit of a waste to have a purple follower to work in a building, and thought it would be better to use her for missions, unless I am missing something?
Do note that every follower will eventually upgrade to purple as they gain XP at level 100, but if you already have her there with the trait, it wouldn't make sense
not
to use her for it.

I agree, that's why I got a lvl 90 green follower to work in the herb graden instead.

You want your worker followers to be at level 100, because it improves the building's output (rarity doesn't matter though).

This ( sort of ) -- you want all followers to be purple level 100 , I never use any of them in buildings --you make FAR more gold from them doing missions then from any bonus they give you in buildings ( except a JC in teh JC building)
A six months ago I actually wrote down my gold totals each week for a month ( I deliberately didnt spend any gold in that period )- here is the results after 4 weeks .
bank alt - ( selling only cloth and pets fron teh raids my main did ) 40k profit
Main ( seven followers with treasure hunters , all cata , 25 man H icc 25man Naz , BT , sunwell , hyjal each week, as well as WoD dungeons and raids general killing of stuff and questing in WoD zones ) 89k
alt 1 ( 10 followers with treasure , garrison only ) 30k
alt 2 ( 13 treasure hunters , garrsion only ) 37k .
this was before teh garrison nerfs so numbers are slightly higher then you will get now
my total gold after that time ( 16/6 ) was 512442 across those 4 toons . It now stands at 1.3 M and i have spent over 400k in that period so I have made over 1 million during that period doing mostly the same thing
the ability to make money is there for everyone - it just takes time to set things up and actual time to play the game , the more you play the more you make -effort equals reward

A couple of things:
1. You don't need them to be 100 when you first assign them to buildings. They get XP from work orders and will level up there over time.
2. You can't say that a follower for missions is worth more than a follower assigned to a building, without saying what the income from the follower attached to the building is.
Let's say you have a follower attached to a mine. Those 6 WOs from the mine get 15 more BR and 15 more TI Ore, approximately. That's 15 x 1g20s + 15 x 1g60s (on average, for my server) => 42g per day. I don't think that single follower will add more than 42g per day assigned to missions instead.

That also depends on how many gold-making missions you get. I have 23 active followers (Barracks and two assigned to buildings) and rarely have them all sent out on missions at once, and that's with taking pretty much every mission that gives something other than XP.

even xp missions give the chance for a salvage box , do every level 100 mission , all my followers are always out

he would easily average more then 42 g a day by doing missions , my followers go on at least two missions each day and sometimes more . I very rarely have any followers that are not on missions , as I cant remember many level 100 mission that require one follower that would mean another one or two wouldnt be able to go on a mission because of lack of numbers if one was assigned to a building ( advanced planning helps this , look at all your available missions and how many followers they need and what abilities are required , then fit the follower to the mission to maximise your numbers).
I collect my mission rewards when I log in and send out my followers again , at end of sessions , or after a few hours if I am playing a long session , I go back to garrison and collect mission rewards again and send the followers back out again before logging off.

I just checked out the
prices of tokens
on various realms and it seems like they are cheapest in the united states, currently costing 35k gold. They cost 60k gold in europe, and about 3 times as much in some of the asian realms. Would that explain why it told me that it would cost about 35k gold to activate my account when it was expired and then goes on to list the tokens for about 60k gold on the auction house? Because I can't really figure it out. Before I subscriped, it said that it would cost me about 35k gold for a token (at the menu where you select your characters) but after I subscriped and I began browsing the auction house it said that a token would cost about 60k.
I managed to clear all the cataclysm raids again after the raids are reset in about one hour, I have a fairly good grasp of the raids, although some of the mechanics have been a pain in the ass. Clearing cataclysm raids is a good way to improve your economy, but its not enough to make enough gold for a token. I am at 20k gold at this point.

yes cata raids give 7-10k per week for 2 hours playtyime. , if tokens are 60 where you are at then they will not be enough ( remember to kill every bit of trash in teh raids to maximise profit).
A lucky run through black temple could net you around 6 or 7 k for 20 minutes playtime( by lucky i mean a couple of pet drops ) and also dependant on teh sell price of pets on your realm. Naxx is around 3k with pet drops . Sunwell and Hyjal are two others that drop well priced pets. Again all around teh 20 to 30 minute mark each to clear.
You only have 1 toon if I remember correctly which makes it more difficult for you as you dont have all professions covered with Tradie Alts. . for example netherweave cloth sell for very little on my realm. If I just sold teh cloth I would get 100g if I was lucky. by sending them to my tailor alt and turning them into bags I get around 800g per week .

We're talking about 1 follower, not many. Going from lets say 20 to 21 followers for missions. I bet you that would not net you more than 42g more per day than you had from 20 followers. Ah well, individual taste I guess, as we have differing opinions.

I just realized that I have 1,400 truesteel ingots laying around. I need to make some truesteel ingots so I can sell them on the AH but the guy who sells the blacksmithing recipe never shows up in my garrison. I think the next thing to do when all the cataclysm raids are cleared is to use professions for making the most gold possible.

What do you want to make? You said Truesteel Ingots, but I'm sure you meant something else. Truesteel Essence? That can be purchased from the plan vendor in your Forge for 5 Secrets of Draenor Blacksmithing. The only things you need the Ore vendor for are Savage and Mighty Truesteel Essence and Savage and Mighty Steelforged Essence, and also Primal Blacksmithing (allow you to craft with Primal Spirit with no CD).
Check the front page of wowhead for which vendor is up. And if it's the Ore vendor, ask in chat for an invite, or look in Custom groups in Group Finder.

No one has yet mentioned making better use of your second primary profession. Good god, you're a miner.
Get yourself out to Tanaan and mine like a lunatic. Sell the Felblight you gather. Go out to Northrend and mine Cobalt, Saronite and Titanium and sell that. When that bore you go back to Outland and mine Fel Iron and Khorium and sell that.
My last piece of advice is to go to the Undermine Journal, find your realm, and look up the prices of the various things you might want to sell, and look at the page for your professions. If you want to make money from your professions you need to educate yourself about your markets.
Actually I lied, this is my last piece of advice, start looking at everything you do in terms of Gold Per Hour. You only have one toon, and you only have so many hours to play. If you decline to play the alt game, you need to start getting the most out of your efforts. If something takes you 2 hours to do, and nets you 1000g, your GPH is 500g. Do those things that net you the highest GPH, and ignore those that net you the least.
But seriously, consider alts. I net an average of 20k a day, and it's piss simple.

Truesteel Ingot
. You can use it to craft a lot of valueable items to sell on the AH apparently.
I got my fishing shack to lvl 3 and my herb garden is going to be lvl 3 soon as well. My small buildings are salvage yard, gem shop, and forge. My medium buildings are the inn and the lumbermill. I have a feeling that once I have enough recourses, I should probably swap the lumbermill with the trading post so I can start trading for some of the stuff I need. As for large buildings, I have the barracks and the bunker. I don't really see any other important large buildings, unless someone has a suggestion?

Your large buildings are fine. Replace that Lumbermill ASAP. It generates the same GR as the Trading Post, but it is a huge time sink to collect the lumber and has a negative profitability rate.
Make it a very high priority to get your Trading Post and level it to 3 immediately. You will need the full queue so that you have a day or two of grace should the accepted material of the day be inconvenient.
If you haven't already, finish up all the zones - quest, bonus objectives, rares, treasures. It will provide you with gold (rewards and vendorables) and GR.

I'm not sure. The lumbermill produces free garrison recourses on a daily basis. I feel like its worth keeping until I am fed with garisson resources, but I could be wrong. When I had the trading post, I could only start work orders if I had enough of the items te trader wanted.

They're not free though, because getting the lumber takes time that you could spend getting gold through other means. Assuming you spend that time doing some moderately profitable activity, you're likely to get more than the cost of the materials for the trading post.

Oh.
Well then.
So, you know better than me because you have made more than the 150k I've made so far this week?
