I think Elura's point was that Asia isn't just one monolith with one culture. :P
Yeah I understood that.
Probably because anything that isnt my own culture fascinates me. Probably because what I'm doing as a life career quite relies upon knowledge of a lot of cultures. (Game Design specialising in Environmental design) To be able to create something like what blizzard did with MoP and WotLK.

That doesn't mean "Asian culture" isn't a real thing thing though. Just like western culture, or African culture, there are overlying trends that permeate most far eastern cultures, such as the influence of Confucianism, patriarchal family structures, religious traditions, and writing styles.
The middle east and east asia are very different though, so to say "asian culture" is a bit misleading. Not saying you can't love all of them, but then it sounds more like you might as well love all cultures.
As far as I've ever heard, the phrase "Asian culture" usually only does refer to the Far East, not the Middle East.

And? That's implying only far east asia is asia, and that is %^&*ed up. So if you say asian culture, you better mean all of it.
No, not really. It's not any different than using American to only refer to the USA instead whole of the Americas. It's simply a common English phrase that I figured you might not be familiar with. I'm not interested turning it into a pissing match.

Isn't the middle east more of an Arabic culture?

It's still asia though and asian culture implies it's all of asia, and to say it's just far east asia isn't right. Besides there's south asia too. And even if it was just far east asia, grouping korea and japan together is really offensive to most koreans.
Asian culture refers to the culture Asian people, not all people of the continent of Asia. Much in the way when somebody uses the term "Americans" it doesn't apply usually apply to people of South and Central America.

And there is nothing wrong with "asian" referring only to people of like 3 countries out of 48?
Like I said, just because people use the term like that doesn't make it right. I know a lot of people not from east asia who get very offended when people don't think they're "real" asians.
If you mean far east asian culture, then say that :)
Besides Mike already said he meant all of asia, apparently, so...
Number of countries is an arbitrary way of defining it, when the population of that handful of countries outnumbers the rest of the Asian continent. Also, and more importantly, culture often refers to ethnicity rather than geography.
Geographically speaking, you are correct, far east Asia is more appropriate, but when referring to the culture of the Asian people, the term typically does not apply to the middle east any more than African culture does.

It comes from the people of Northeast Africa and Southwest Asia sharing a lot of cultural, religious, racial, and philosophical tendencies, thanks in large part to the conquest of the ancient Persians. We've just dubbed that culture the "Middle East" since it doesn't share a lot of cultural lines with the rest of Asia or Africa.
Since far eastern Asia and the Middle East share very few cultural tenancies, it doesn't make a lot of sense to describe them both as "Asian culture". That's like saying Brazil and Canada are both "American culture" when they historically share very little.

That is exactly my goddamn point. Asian culture and American culture shouldn't be terms because they make no sense.
That's not your point. His point is that we say "Asian culture" to refer to the Far East because that's what is typically thought of when someone refers to "Asia." The Middle East is its own cultural area spanning multiple continents, hence why it isn't really considered Asia OR Africa, but its own thing.
American culture is because the United States is what most people think of when someone says America, unless specified to be South America or Canada.

Maybe we should rename this thread DOTD.
I do agree somewhat with Elura though - although I don't see it being as big a deal as she does, I think that people are often too closed minded when they think of 'Asia'. The other half of the population on the Asian continent (i.e. India) would beg to differ about whether their existence should be acknowledged, I would think.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##Squishalot##DELIM##

The fact that people only think of far east asia when they hear asia IS A BAD THING.
Out of curiosity, why? Does that make the term "Middle East" a bad thing, then?
