To be more thorough: anything that's classified as magical damage (has a magic school associated with it) it not reduced by armor. There's more of that than you think; for instance hunters' Arcane Shot and Explosive Shot are both magical damage. Bleed effects also are not mitigated by armor (such as druid's Rip).
Clothies in particular are all spellcasters -- no exceptions. The only physical damage you might take from a clothie is if you're facing a demonology warlock (their pet's damage).
Clothies also typically are ranged classes, so as a necessity they have spells that can absorb damage, heal away damage, or mechanics to turn the battle in their favor such as rooting you in place, slowing you down and other annoying effects. Speaking
very
generally, clothies often have a distinct advantage over plate wearers, but it all depends on the particular class and spec.
Leather wearers (feral druids and rogues) have a much tougher time with plate wearers than any clothie does. But it's not always because of the armor, but because of the unique mechanics of the class. Plate wearers are specifically designed to stand toe-to-toe with the enemy and have more than just armor on their side when doing so.
Edit:
I also want to add, you should think of WoW as an extremely complex variant of rock-paper-scissor. Every class has strengths and weaknesses; and every class has other classes which it has a natural advantage over, and those which it's at a natural disadvantage against. There is no class that has no weaknesses.

In a game like WoW, don't hold onto any prejudice too strongly. Different classes scale differently with gear upgrades, and (with very few exceptions, if any) every major patch tends to bring about significant changes. Not to mention every expansion has brought about anywhere from
major
changes to fundamental overhauls. What may be true today probably won't be towards the middle of this expansion, and very likely will not be by the next expansion.
I mean, back when I started my rogue it was pretty much a universal rule that rogues slaughtered warlocks, almost without exception. Unless I've gotten rusty from not playing my rogue recently (took a break from him after hitting 90 right after MoP's release), that's far from true anymore. In fact, in what PvP I have done lately (including duels which were roughly gear-matched), warlocks are one of the toughest classes for me to face right now. In any case it's certainly not the hard-counter it used to be.
From your posts I'm getting the suggestion that you're relatively new to the game. I'll give you this piece of advice now: if you find a class you really enjoy, stick to it. So many players make the mistake of ditching the class they love when things get changed that the community as a whole has developed a strong stigma towards the development team. If you want to see what I mean, visit the official forums and peruse the endless threads about how the developers are incompetent, every class sucks and PvP will never be balanced. Written by people who continue to play it and pay for it, no less. A very good assessment of the situation has become a little cliche in the community:
Nerf rock. Paper is fine.
- Scissors
Your class will change, and the game around it will to. If you find a class you like because of their fundamental mechanics and not because they happen to be able to blow things up with impunity at the moment, keep at it. The changes that will eventually come keep the game interesting; else we'd've all gotten bored of WoW years ago.
