In your opinion, how long should it take to get geared from heroics?

My main is currently a fresh 90, but I raided a lot on 6 different characters back in Wrath (just getting back into the swing of things).
I heard somebody say something about a nerf to drop rates...is this true? Or just somebody bellyaching? It didn't take me long at all to get all the gear I needed from Heroics. I played a few hours every day, but I was working full-time and maintaining a social life as well.
Should I expect a grind of Vanilla proportions? Or is the person that told me that drop rates were nerfed just blowing smoke?

I don't see how dungeons or raids could have their boss droprates nerfed, as they have a set amount of gear they drop on each kill.
So no, droprates aren't nerfed, your "person" is messing with you or just mad he has back luck with RNG.

It sounds like those that you have been hearing this from are referring to LFR. If your raiding experience was from back in Wrath, then things are a bit different now. Heroic dungeon drops are similar to what they were before (in %). Also, the random queue Scenarios at 90 will drop gear (sometimes) that is equivalent to that of heroics. This being said, there are some changes:
LFR is now available, which allows you to queue for a raid. THIS is where the drop rates have been "nerfed" as many people like to whine. Every boss kill, the game does rolls for each individual. This is internal and you either get a piece of gear, or a bag with some gold. I *think* it's a 15% chance for gear from this, but often seems lower (if feels like all you ever get is gold). This drop is dependent on your current spec, which means if you're currently spec'd as a tank, you'll only get tank gear. You can (and I have experienced this) run several LFR's every week, and not receive a single upgrade.
Vanilla grinds are back! But in the form of rep-grinds through dailies. The gear is a much higher ilvl than that of heroics or LFR, but it takes several weeks of dailies to unlock it (and then it must be purchased with Valor points, which have a cap of 3000 and a weekly cap of 1000/week).
TLDR - no, the heroic drops rates have not been nerfed, and technically neither have the LFR drops, though ppl feel that they "never" get anything, this is untrue and just RNG.

Thanks for all the info.
I'm feral dps, but courtesy of my guild I have a tank whenever I want...one of my irl friends recruited me (it's all his fault I'm getting back into the game in the first place -_- ) and he's the guild main tank. He knows I'm a quality player and his guild is in desperate need of good dps...they have very skilled tanks and healers but their dps is...acceptable. At best (of their top 8 guild dpsers, 6 are hunters...yay for redundancy and gear squabbles!). Hence my recruitment. Also, in my experience most guilds either want me to tank or heal...so being recruited as kitty dps is rather refreshing.
Anyway, my buddy...the guild MT...tanks heroics for me whenever I need a tank. So queue times really aren't an issue. Definitely going to remember the tip about scenarios, though, thanks for that.
Also, thanks for bringing me up to date on how the whole system works. I needed that, lol.

In my guild (I'm the main tank), I run all fresh 90 in heroic and he get 460 ilvl in a day. Some of them only took an extra day to reach 470, some took 2-3 more days for a total of 2 up to 4 days to get to 470. (Do Sha for boots, you can get your 476 armor/hand crafted for relatively cheap and even your 496 if you're rich) There's also darkmoon fare trinket that for almost every class except tank are BiS or at least good for a very long time.
If you don't have tank, scenario can be a good option but you can't ONLY run scenario. I did got purple 2 time from it but I got lucky as hell. And even if you get some, they are rather low quality, same with blue. There's one that gives a quest for a 450 ilvl weapon if you just dinged, but you should replace it as quickly as you can in heroic.
Otherwise you can always farm justice and upgrade your blue gears too.

Also keep in mind:
-You are probably rolling against another class
-You are rolling against RNG even allowing X item to be lootable from the boss
My rogue hit 90 on Sunday, 12/23. I did some instances then, and on the 27th and 29th. Somehow I ended up being the only leather wearer in most of my runs (though I did lose a couple ring/neck/trink upgrades to hunters) and ended up getting 460 geared with just 3 days of runs.
It took my mage and paladin (the first two to hit 90) much longer.
Don't forget that you can supplement your ilvl with PVP gear in case a piece is really dragging you down, but this is generally frowned upon in organized raiding (LFR doesn't usually care).

Not to gear for LFR really though... the craftable PVP gear is only ilvl 458 I believe. And time spent grinding honor for purchasable gear is probably better spent in heroics/scenarios. Honestly, even though you only get a gear drop from scenarios every 3-4 runs, it's always for your class (i.e. Plate for Plate wearers) and they only take 10-15 min to complete, sometimes less.

450 (same as craftable pve gear). Honor pvp gear is 458.

As Zakkhar said, the craftable stuff is 450.
I have had less than okay (pretty crappy, actually) luck with regards to item drops from scenario bags.
Out of my three 90s so far, my mage has only gotten a single item - the robe - and with having less than crappy luck in dungeons that drop the heroic replacements for items the mage needed (shoulders, bracer, at one point gloves) throwing on a 450 shoulder instead of the 430 that I was stuck with gave me the ilvl I needed to get into raids. (After that, I got several 476 upgrades that put me over 460 total ilvl anyway.)
My rogue, my currently working 90, didn't need any (as I mentioned above) because I got 9 heroic upgrades plus the sha boots (so ten) within 3 days. That's crazy good luck, given the glut of monks on my battlegroup.
Sure, I still have green bracers, legs, and shoulders, but I can get into raids thanks to my average ilvl and put out competitive (albeit raid-starter-level) dps.
Once your foot is in the door, the only way is to go up.

Really it all comes down to luck .
For example on day when i first hit 90 i chained 9 heroics - first 7 not one bit of gear dropped , next two I got 4 peices.
Another example - one week in LFR i won 9 bits of gear , 5 of which were usefull ( 4 teir peices in that :) ) while most weeks I am lucky to get 1 or 2 peices .
The thing to remenber is that if you dont run dungeons or do LFR then the gear will never drop , the more you do the quicker you will get your your gear
