Hi guys,
I was trying some searching macros to help me finding rares and roaming NPCs, and got the idea to self whisper "Found %t", so i would have another visual indication of the success (i play in a 9" netbook, so any visual helps).
That got me two problems:
1) Is there a way for the macro to fill my name in the "/w ME Found %t", so i dont have to make a macro for each of my 12537 toons?
2) My wife wants the macro too, and she said that if i dont get it to "work properly" i will be in trouble...
So, can you guys help me (and save my hide)?
Thanks,
Musta

There are addons that do that, you know?
Otherwise, that would be..
/run SendChatMessage("Found %t","WHISPER",nil,UnitName("player");
But that's really not convenient. You have to target the mob and click on the macro which doesn't make any sense to me. If you already found/click the rare mob, why would you try to warn yourself that you found one?
SilverDragon
is one of the addon that does that.
Rare Spawn Overlay
can be useful too, but it's not up-to-date for Pandaria. I'm not sure either if it has the overlay for Cataclysm zones. But for any rare mobs in Outland and Northrend, it eases the search and narrow it to specific zone and path. The last and not the least is
_NPCScan
and it's probably the best out there as it can be extended to any mob in the game by entering the ID of the mob (
www.wowhead.com/npc=65435
for example, where 65435 is the ID of the mob). It comes with a preloaded list of mobs, mostly rare, like the Time-Lost Proto Drake in Storm Peaks, Northrend.

/run SendChatMessage("Found "..UnitName("target").."!","whisper",nil,UnitName("player"))
The problem with the macro is that it will only trigger when you've targeted something. An add-on like NPC Scan will alert you the moment it detects a rare, most often before you even know it's spawned.
If you're using the macro to target non-rares (like bothersome, semi-rare quest targets), you can definitely put /targetexact on the first line:
/targetexact BothersomeSemiRareQuestTarget
/stopmacro
/run SendChatMessage("Found "..UnitName("target").."!","whisper",nil,UnitName("player"))

Thanks guys,
-----------------
TheRealArkayn,
I didnt put my whole macro here, as i thougth it wasnt necessary, but it goes almost like your sugestion.
It actually search for the npc and targets it for me, but i just wanted another way of diplaying it. I am a crazy clicker when im riding around, and i may click something else and change target before i realize i found what i wanted.
Also, when i send/receive a new wisper it opens another dialog tab, and that is really hard to miss in a tiny screen like mine...
-----------------
GTMistral,
As for the addon option, well...
If i can do that with a macro that dont need to stay in the memory the whole time my computer will be much happier :)
The only addon i use is wowhead's. I know its "heavy", but its my way of paying for all the info i got here :D
-------------------------
Thanks again,
Musta

Your finger is going to thank you for the addon after many thousands of click for nothing. ;)
And I believe you have to edit your macro everytime you're looking for another rare in another zone or sub-zone, right? Why not making the process so much easier? And loading such addon isn't really an issue for performance. Addons like Gatherer with thousands of entry can be an issue though, but not _NPCScan. It's only a few kilobytes in the memory. Just imagine cruising around and BAM, _NPCScan has spotted a rare spawn for you to kill and you didn't do anything! ;)
(My Gatherer can use like 40MB of RAM!)

Yup its true, i edit the macro each time i "change target".
And yup yup, sometimes its annoying hitting a button a hundret times per second during some years till i find the BothersomeSemiRareQuestTarget :)
The problem here is that (i didnt checked this info yet...) a friend told us that NPCScan and the like are "against the ToS, as it automates an action without any hardware imput from the player". So my wife dont use for fear of losing her account (and i dont use couse im square, and got a old computer)
I dont really think its really like that, couse she use some "Auctionsomething" that creates multiple auction stacks with 2 clicks (and following the above "rule" that would be against the ToS).
But again, thanks for the help.
I think i will search some real info in the addons :)
