I'm wondering if I should go and check out rated BG's. So I'm wondering if I will just come up against even better geared PvP teams and hinder my team, or could I actually help in anyway?
Also if I am too low geared is sucking up the terrible-ness of random Bg's the only way to effectively get honor?
No, you should not check out rated BGs if you are in quest greens/blues right now because they are far more competitive and everyone in there is going to be in full dreadful with a few pieces of malevolent by now.
You would need, at a bare minimum, the "contender" set which you can buy on the auction house or you can tough it out in BGs until you can put together the dreadful set (honor items). I opted for the latter.
You will want to buy a crafted weapon since you will not get a replacement from pvp until you have 7250 conquest points for the season. You can do this quest to get a solid weapon quickly:
The Arena of AnnihilationIf you are a Scribe you can craft a i476 staff for yourself - i would recommend that you do if you can.
The difference between pve and pvp gear now is even more. Without pvp gear they'll reduce 65% of your damage if in full cata gear atm, with passive class reduction such as shadow priests -15% brining it to -80% damage if I'd just dinged right now I'd try to duel other people with similar gear for some practice if I were you. or you're gonna be critting for 5-10k.
Damage reduction values do not stack cumulatively. They stack progressively, with the largest damage reduction value first, and the next highest applied to the previously reduced amount until all relevant reductions are applied.
Example--
Resil: -50% dmg
Class Ability: -25% dmg
Damage Amount: 50,000
First, damage is reduced by 50% from resil, bringing it down to 25,000.
Next, the 25,000 is reduced by 25%, bringing it to 18,750.
This is not the same as 50,000 being reduced by 75% (50% + 25%), which would have brought the 50K hit down to 12,500.
I believe that damage boosting abilities work the same way, so if you have a 20% damage boosting class ability and you pick up the zerker buff in a BG for 30% more damage, it doesn't mean you are doing 50% more damage. Your damage is buffed progressively by 30%, then again by 20%.
