For the record - I've played this game since 2.2.2.
I played casually during Cataclysm. Today I decided to log back in for the first time in several months. Thought of returning back to do some achievements. Decided to start with low level quests while waiting for the PvP BG queue.
My Rogue was in Stormwind when I logged in. The closest zone to SW is Elwynn. However, there is no achievement for quests completed in Elwynn. So what does any alliance to after Elwynn? Westfall, of course!
I fly over to Westfall. Over to the cart, as I remember that's where you get your first quest in Westfall just as you enter the zone over the bridge.
WHAT IS THE FIRST QUEST I GET? WHAT IS THE ONE THING I REMEMBER ABOUT GREETING ME EVERYTIME I ENTER WESTFALL?
A murder quest.
Old Blanchy is dead
.
!@#$ the Furlbrow family, I didn't care about them. Old Blanchy, however... I remember that horse from day 1. She saw two generations of Furlbrows struggle through their lives in Azeroth. It is because of her Thrall almost got killed in the barn during the escape from Durnholde Keep.
And she lay dead right there. Just as you enter the %^&*ing zone.
Blizzard, %^&* you for getting me so emotionally invested with your minor characters. (I know Blizzard employees don't read this officially, don't worry)
I now feel crap and demoralised. All over a minor NPC who has 2 dialogue lines.
Are there any minor characters you wish didn't die off?
P.S. I know I'm a slowpoke regarding all things WoW nowadays.

I felt the same when I first went back to Darkshore. My beloved Auberdine ..gone! My first quests on the mainland most of the npcs dead or you fail to save them..and then Volcor dies just when you find his pet Grimclaw and help to heal him ...I was in tears every time. Never mind the land has been ripped apart and the twilights hammer ..and trolls....
When I go to Old Hillsbarad I give Young Blanchy a pat ...R.I.P. old friends.Btw I also visit Invincibles grave when I am in the area. He was innocent too.

I definitely was a little sad about Auberdine and Ashenvale. Those were where I leveled my first character. They definitely killed off characters I remembered. And South Shore...:(
However, I also liked seeing progression in other minor characters- for example, the cameos during the molten front dailies, when you have to take a crew of druids and a minor character into battle, were fun. I thought it was great that in 65 levels Keeshan still hadn't found a shirt. I enjoyed that the guy from Ogri'la finally had his Shattari Skyguard mount. Stuff like that. I guess I'll take the good with the bad.
I really hope they don't kill off Keeshan though...

Did you finish the Westfall chain? It's pretty awesome, and quite a twist at the end.
I logged out right as I saw the corpse. Hence the rant about it on Wowhead, and hence the lack of proper formatting in the post.

Then log back in and finish it up; you won't regret that.

RIP Blanchy (and I've been horde for most of the time I've played since vanilla beta). For anyone who's done old Darkshore the rescue quest is hands down the most touching quest in the entire game.

Things change. People and other beings die. Even in a game. Especially in a game. You can like or dislike the fact, but you can still enjoy the story being told around it.

Your comment about when you started made me curious about which patch I came in on, so I looked up the patch release dates. Turns out I am a 2.3.0 baby.
I felt rather sad about poor Old Blanchy, and about many things which have been changed irrevocably or have been removed. I am also very very excited about all there is to come. For me personally, it's all good.
I have all those wonderful memories, and don't really need to complete quest X on my 37th alt the same way I did on my main. I do feel a bit sad though, that players who have perhaps only just started playing won't get to experience the world as I did, but as others have said, that's life. That's the way it works IRL, and that's the way it works in WoW. Outside of books (and old console games) nothing remains unchanged.
