I'll have Spiffy look into it--his wife just had a baby yesterday, so his to do list is growing, but hopefully he can give you a reply by Monday!

I'm not quite sure if you're talking about the background color itself or the opacity of the background. Do you have a url I can look at?

I'll make this easier for you, since I did some digging after I noticed this on some WH links on WoW Insider today:
All the background urls in
http://wowcss.zamimg.com/css/basic.css
are invalid. They're missing protocol parts; maybe some http/https switch code gone wrong. The tooltips are showing up completely transparent, which is
not exactly readable
.
See this CSS snippet (deparsed via Firebug):
.wowhead-tooltip td, .wowhead-tooltip th {
background: url("//wowimg.zamimg.com/images/wow/tooltip.png") repeat scroll 0 0 transparent;
// ........................^ this needs an http: in front of it
color: white;
font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;
line-height: 17px;
}

Thanks ChairmanKaga, we appreciate that :)

The protocol-less syntax is valid. I'm still not quite sure what the op's issue is and until he responds I won't be able to look into it.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##SpiffyJr##DELIM##

I think the Wowhead tooltip element (in particular, <table>) is inheriting CSS rules from
http://sixelis.com/style/forum.css
in lines 34-39:
table
{
width: 100%;
background-color: #252525;
border-collapse: collapse;
}
I think it would be better for you to create more classes, and use selectors in your CSS to better target elements.
I think ChairmanKaga's problem is a different one - the tooltip background image seems to have not loaded at all. Maybe an intermittent issue with Internet load?(##RESPBREAK##)2700##DELIM##Neutronimity##DELIM##

Hmmmm, so it is. Looks like my problem was Firefox caching being derp.

Using !important is rather unforgiving. It's probably best for you to define your table with a class.

Testing posts here, since we just had maintenance. :x

The problem with using !important is we prevent those that want to be able to customize the tooltip from doing so.
