Burnished Breastplate of Might
From reading the gear description, I understand the stats on these items don't increase passed level 80, however can I continue to reap the benefits of the 10% XP after i hit 80?

Nope, it all stops at level 80. But the Helm and Cape you get from the guild vendor work up to level 85.

You do not get the exp bonus past level 80
79-80 bonus
80-81 no bonus
The cloak and helm work though.

I stand corrected. I'm going to delete my post as to avoid confusing anyone else who may skim through this one.

Also important to note is this will have an iLvl of 1, so when you're nearing 80, say 78-79, I'd save a few piece of gear to replace your heirloom when you hit 80 so you can hopefully que for some cata instances.
You do
NOT
need to equip that gear to have it count for your average item level, just carry it in your inventory. Even gear from lower armor classes counts, as long as you could equip it, say, no class restrictions. Since Heirlooms will still have stats like a level 80 dungeon drop (item level 200) you will only actually replace those with Cataclysm quest rewards/dungeon drops.
And when you reach 85 and acquire some crafted PvP stuff to bump your average item level, for heaven's sake don't equip that - any piece that is 333+ should be equal or better, and you can sell it again later when you have "true" (PvE) gear with a similar item level. Again, you don't need to equip or even bind it to you, it just needs to sit in your inventory or bank.

80-81 no bonus.
I might be wrong, or Blizz may have fixed it, but as far as I recall the first player reaching lvl 85 after Cataclysm launch actually used boa gear that was supposed to work to lvl 80. According to him the exp bonus actually worked through level 80 as well as up until he dinged. Then the exp bonus faded.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it may just be worth a shot.
*EDIT: After some research I found some unofficial threads about it which clarified that it wouldn't work through level 80.
I'd say try it, if you already have the gear somewhere in your bank or bags. You can be the judge. :)
