The theory behind facebook is brilliant, and pretty darn useful - as Patty puts it - to connect with ones you barelly see.
The uses it has... People just can't separate their lives from a wall every single "friend" can see. People don't realise saying anything there is the equivalent of going on a bar full of people you know on a daily basis and yell - and more often than intended, bad things happen.
Though this mitigates as you grow up, the sheer "WHY DON'T YOU POST ON FACEBOOK" "COMMENT MY PICS" "I HAVE MORE FRIENDS THAN YOU" that comes with the pack in teen years is just tiresome.
And their aggressive policies don't really help. I had my only social network account deactivated (hi5), and 2 years (!) later, upon recieving a tip from a friend, I realise the account is still there, but has been hacked with pornographic photos (I got no mail to warn me of the reactivation), because apparently you cannot simply delete an account, you have it deactivated and a simple login brings it back.
I created a facebook account to participate on whatever contest I can't recall (because apparently contests are now facehooked, even my freaking anti-virus wants to force me to like it on facehook), and surprise, you can't delete it, just suspend it. I can still perfectly log on there.
It's super easy to get in. But almost impossible to get out. Bear in mind I didn't spend more than 2-3mins on Facebook and there might be a way to permanently delete it, but it sure isn't readilly showing.

Its just the next step to Global Conspiracy. The Government doesnt view it as enough to enslave us (Shcool,Work and etc.) but unlike any other Conqueror History has ever known the Government wants to get inside their slave's very minds, everyday life and if possible, our very souls!I tend to avoid Facebook and view it,as I said earlier as just a Pawn for the
Major Plan

It's a double-edged sword. It's a good tool for keeping in touch with people, as most of my friends have dispersed all over the UK for university and stuff. On the other hand, there are the people Who Post Every Ten Minutes About How Difficult Their Lives Are And How People Who Will Know Who I'm Talking About But Will Not Name Because Being "Cryptic" Is Cool, You Know, along with the TYPES WHO ARE FAT AND UGLY AND NO ONE CARES ABOUT THEM AND THEY'RE CRYING BECAUSE THEY JUST CAN'T COPE ANY MORE and the types who just upload duckface pics all the time. So yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with social media.
Wow, that was everything I wanted to say but in a funnier way. Yeah, this.

Ok...
I like it. That way I can easily keep contact with old friends on the other side of the country.

Yeah,it is useful for
'keeping in contact'
and just regularly puting some not so much personal info on your Page but the careless people who are on Facebook 24/7 are puting up all of their life on their Facebook Pages and get brainwashed too easily. The more aware people like you and me will either be taken by
The Rapture
or be the ones who are going to fill the Torture Pits of the Antichrist.
I apologize for my extreme tendencies towards Conspiracy :D

I barely use it, but I can see how other people would find it useful. no strong opinion either way, really. It's a nice reminder for people's birthdays, though.

Good idea, but so much overrated. And too much hype.

Well Mark Zuckerberg is a billionaire, so I think that's a fair indication that he's done a pretty good job.
Then again, Apple is the second-largest privately owned company in the world (at least they were last time I checked about 2 weeks ago), and I think their products are utter crap.

Question of the Day #13: What is your opinion on Facebook?
I personally don't use it, but I can't deny the fact it's a pretty good site for that you can personalize (without having to start a blog or something) and otherwise connect with other people. However, the problem with Facebook is it's rather...public. It gives just about anyone who can use Facebook the potent power to track anyone else who uses it (a very large number of people). For instance, colleges now check an applicant's Facebook wall and can make judgement calls based on the contents there (although I guess this is technically a good thing, but...). I'm just not comfortable with publicizing so much information and besides, I don't really have anyone to connect to with Facebook that I can't already do through a piece of software like Steam or in real life via my cell phone.

^ This. Pretty much I view it as a tool for corporations/governments to find out what we're doing and what we like. Facebook sells our information (which we give willingly) to corporations, who then use the information to market things to our IP address (ever wonder how a site "knows" what you've been searching for online lately or about your favorite band?) as well as collect the data in order to market to our demographic as a whole via television and what-not. Basically, they can use the information to create products that we will buy, as well as create marketing techniques that will make us WANT to buy. Also, the government can subpoena the information if they want, gathering information on what you do, your religion/political opinions, and any illegal activities you may be partaking in (drugs, underage drinking, illegal downloading, "threats" towards the government which could be simply saying that you are an anarchist, etc) For instance, right now I have my political and religious views as anarchist and atheist, respectively. Could this make me a target, and make my facebook more likely to be watched? Well, yes. But I'm not TOO worried about it ATM. I keep my name in another language, and do not divulge other extremely sensitive details.
I keep a facebook, only to keep in touch with classmates/friends who use it as their primary means of communication. Do I think it's scary and disgusting? Yes. It's not primarily a social networking site any more, but a giant research experiment in which the users are lab rats.
edit: and I don't mean to get all Huxley on you, but for those of you that are addicted to those facebook/zynga games, I view it as a means to sedate the masses. They are so simple, but created to be addicting. They keep you focused on trivial matters. Granted, WoW and the like are also addicting, but I've never seen anyone addicted to an RPG the way my mother and grandmother, among countless friends, are addicted to flash games. -_-

I deleted my main facebook that had hundreds of friends, you have to google "delete facebook" (really, it's the only simple way), and click a link in an e-mail...and most importantly...NOT SIGN ON FOR TWO WEEKS. Signing on in this period will re-activate it. After two weeks of not signing in to FB or any of the accounts linked to it, it will be gone "permanently" (but they probably keep your information forever.)
I wish I never clicked that link...
My sentiments exactly.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

I don't have a cell phone or iPod Touch or anything like that (with messaging) so when my girlfriend is at work I use it to message her and that is all I really use Facebook for.
