I watched a video of some of the tsunami wrecking part of a town, and the sheer force of the tsunami just seemed astounding. Houses were being ripped off their foundations, cars were being pushed uphill, and everything was just going to hell. My heart goes out to all those affected by both the quake and the resultant tsunami.

Pretty shaken up.
This is so offensive.
I mean come on, be more mean to a certain person? jesus.
What if it HAS happened to him before? WHAT IF HE KNOWS HOW IT FEELS?

For those of you wanting a proper breakdown of the situation regarding the nuclear plants, there is a truly
excellent summary here
. It is drawn together by several experts in the field, using information from official sources. It explains a lot of the terminology and science, and answers all of the most frequently asked questions about the situation.
Every journalistic news channel I've seen has severely misreported in the last 4 days, as they tend to report rumour as fact, and a big game of Chinese Whispers ensues.
If you have even a passing interest I would recommend you read that article, and consider how well your favourite news outlet has done at avoiding panic, scremongering and misreporting, let alone the prevalence of journalists completely misunderstandig the science.
Nice link; that cleared up a lot of questions actually.
New Question: What do you think will happen in the Nuclear Power industry after this ends?
E: Bad choice of words...

The rest of the world will start using the Japanese methods to safeguard their plants?

Yeah, but don't you think the media (and by extension, the citizens) will get to the government and plea for something stupid such as the removal of Nuclear Power as a whole?

Scroll down to the end of the post and read the comment from the guy in the nuclear research industry, in fact you might want to read the whole series of posts.
People have to realize, and the media isn't helping, that this was a 1 in ~1000 year event. It's an extreme event. The nuclear plants were designed for an 8.2 event. They received an 9.0 magnitude earthquake according the last USGS report I saw. They had tsunami protections in place, but as with the earthquake, their protections were what they thought to be the maximum they'd see in the plant's lifetime. They were wrong, so were the geologists that told them the plant would only experience earthquakes and tsunamis below those maximums. Engineers can only take the information they have and do the best with it.
Nuclear plants will still be built. They will probably still be built in "at risk" areas (what areas aren't at risk to something?). But they will be built with more containment features, more backup systems, until the next unforeseeable failure.

As of April 16th the topics about the tsunami and radioactive contamination have left the news in my country. Currently running are a killing spree at a shopping mall and a mother killing her 4 babies.

I don't think radioactive contamination spreading across oceans reaching to california is possible. If nuclear energy is so dangerous, then why use it? Wouldn't it cause more harm in the long run if we continue keeping our own nuclear plants up.

A large part of the world is heavily dependant on nuclear energy. We can't just remove it, we need to make a slow but steady transition to green energy.

Futurama had a decent concept. Ship all of the nuclear waste to outer space and in a couple thousand years, it will come back and hit us. Instead of nuclear waste, they used trash.

Which is horrible if you think about it. Thousands and thousands of death and almost unimaginable destruction leaves the news after a few weeks, and gets replaced by minor (Also horrible, of course, but not in comparison) news and "disasters".
I suppose it's just how news work. Most people seem to have lost interest aswell, sadly.

Then again, the quality of the news would diminish if they just said 'lot 'o people died' every day.

Of course, and I'm not questioning why they do it or what would happen if they didn't. I'm just saying, it's horrible :p
About nuclear energy: Do you have any numbers (thinking percentages here) on the use of Nuclear energy in the world?
