So I hear that a few bullet trains were swept into the sea, and 800 people on them are missing. Any confirmation of this?
I know that they are missing four trains that ran on the coastal lines. The bullet train only runs South from Tokyo, so I think they were probably local trains. Nobody knows how many people were on them yet.
I see. I heard it from word of mouth, so that sounds more likely.

It DID happen to me. I was literally less tha 200 metres away from one of the buildings in Christchuch when it came down and caught fire. So yeah, know how they are feeling tbh.

No. 3 Reactor containing Mox on the verge of exploding.
(2.000.000 times more radioactive than Uranium)
man... can't they catch a break?

er - where did you pull that number from?
MOX is simply Mixed OXide fuel - i.e. it has a number of different radioactive oxides in it - mostly Uranium and Plutonium. That doesn't magically make it '2,000,000' times more radioactive.
Also, bear in mind that were it to be that much more radioactive, you would need 2,000,000 times less of it, or a reactor 2,000,000 times larger in order to deal witht he heat output.
In actual fact MOX cores run a bit hotter than standard ones, purely because the material has less thermal conductivity so the heat has more difficulty dissipating.
So lets not go throwing silly scarenumbering numbers around :p
Yeah, I don't know.
Someone in the chatroom said it and decided to add it in. Need something to catch some attention.

Things usually are; they said they vented the gas from the leak from the reactor already, and sent it into the atmosphere. I'm sure there is still a threat, but seeing as shortly after the meltdown started, American and other countries sent supplies, technicians and other people in to keep it from going thermo and going ka-boom, it's just getting turned into a 'sensational' story, because they couldn't do the same when Chernobyl started screwing up all those long years ago.
Also, out of pretty much the entire world, if there is any country prepared for big disasters, it's Japan; they've been preparing for the next big quake for the last 15 years, and once they get back on their feet, you know that what happened this time, will never happen again; they are probably already preparing better break walls, reinforcing buildings to take tidal pressure and all the rest. Japan is one of the most resilient nations out there....which, considering what was dropped on their country 60 odd years ago, is just expected.

People forget that every cubic meter of water weighs over a tonne
Add to that the sheer force of the Tsunami, several Nuclear reactors having critical issues aswell as a 7.9 earthquake and you have quite the disaster on your hands.
My thoughts are with you Japan.

Indeed. Ever since the end of WWII, Japan has been one of the most adaptive(for the lack of a better word?) countries in the world. Especially since the Kobe-quake back in '95. As you say, if a seismic event like this takes place just off Japan again, the damage will be near-minimal in comparison to those sustained this time. And the damage sustained now is minimal compared to the destruction that would've taken place should it have happened somewhere else.
Sorry about the double post, didn't read Adams' comment until after i posted my own and wanted to respond as quickly as possible.
