To be fair, it was rarely done with Speed potions. Although I agree, it's pretty silly to try to pre-pot with a 15 second potion.
Typically what would happen would be that classes with talents that convert armor to AP and tanks would use a two minute duration armor potion right before a pull, and then DPS would use a haste potion once that expired or tanks would use another armor potion.

For Spriests and affliction locks it's not insanely marginal. They have to use it at the beginning of the fight anyway for thier DoT's that refresh. Of course for any other casters it is just silly. Spriests and Aff locks will benefit for the full encounter for doing it, where as other classes will benefit for like 10 seconds.

Hmm, are you up-to-date with the latest changes made regarding DoT's?

Rolling crit modifiers no longer apply.

Rolling crit, but what about haste? They redesigned haste, which is why I'm asking.

unless you are bleeding edge, it's an insignificant dps increase. Basically it is drinking a pot right before a pull so that you get some of the duraction of that pot during the fight without using your 'one pot per fight'.
