Gender choice of characters

Why do people assume so much based on what gender you choose to play in game?
When I'm on my female troll shaman, people assume one of three things.
1) I am a female myself (assuming this is reasonable)
2) If I'm not a female, I'm gay.
3) If I'm not gay, I'm some horny (can I say that here?) male who likes to look at pixel !@#$s.
Why do people make assumptions about who is behind a character based on what gender they play. And beyond that, why does it even matter?
Why would it matter if I was a girl, gay, or anything else. I can play the game just like anyone else can, but yet I get insulted when people find out I'm male. I have been in dungeons, and had someone say she and I correct them be telling them it should be he, not she, and in many cases I've had people throw the "F" word at me, not the 4 letter one. I don't understand why any of that matters, and why I get insulted.
So are any of you males and play a female character?
Or are any of you female and play a male character? Do you get similar issues when people find out you're female?
Do you think people are justified in assuming so much from gender choice?
And lastly, if you play a character opposite your actual gender, why did you choose so?
Also, I'd like to apologize if there are long sentences with lots of commas or it's sort of scatter brained. I have zero organization skills when it comes to writing, and I use commas way too much.

Nothing wrong with a male playing as a female character.
Both of my best characters, a blood elf priest and an orc warrior, are females.

I play a few female charatcers simply because I like variety, so I won't have more than two of the same race on the server I play on and those two won't be the same gender. It is slightly irritating that I won't be able to have a full house though now that we have Goblins coming, Which means I won't be having a female Goblin or Troll.

I prefer female Draenei, Gnomes and Humans, and male Dwarves and Nelves. I find it hilarious when I'm on a lady character, in LFD, and the group assumes I'm female IRL. I always play it up, and it's epic when you get a White Knight who leaps to your defence.

I've heard that on some servers, it's frowned upon to be male but play a female character. You're the one paying for your game time, not them. Who cares what they think? The way I see it, if I'm going to be looking at someone's rear end for many, many hours, it's going to be a female's.
EDIT: I once had a guild officer who was female IRL but played a male character. We thought it was hilarious, but it didn't actually influence our opinion of her.

I'm not female in real life. I'm also not a troll or an orc in real life...
Male Human Warrior
Male Human Rogue
Male Gnome Warlock
Female Night Elf Druid
Female Draenei Mage
Female Human Paladin
Female Human Priest
I think that's all my characters.
I don't really see why people get offended or offensive about other people's character gender and race selections. If it helps you conceptualize it, imagine that I'm standing over a tabletop playing with action figures. Sometimes I'm controlling this Female Draenei Mage over here, sometimes I'm controlling the Male Human Warrior over there. If I'm playing Mortal Combat (or whatever new games there are these days), sometimes I'm picking a female character because I like the cast animations or move they can do. If I'm playing Final Fantasy, sometimes I'm controling female characters.
It's a game...

Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of people in random dungeons that assume, since they're likely to never see you again, that they can get away with whatever they like. The people spouting obscenities and name-calling usually think they're being cute or funny when they're anything but.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is ignore them or just not even bother correcting them in the first place. There's really no talking sense into someone immature enough to think that's hilarious. Why does it matter if some random person you're never going to talk to again refers to you as a she? Males playing female characters isn't some tiny, unheard of minority.

I am female and only have female characters.
I don't care for the look or animations of any of the male characters, except maybe blood elves and Taurens. I don't care for female orcs either.
I don't care what gender of toon anyone plays.
I used to play with a really nice family, the husband is in the military, very "manly" type, and his main was a female ret pally with a very obviously girl name. Did that make him any less manly, or less capable? Well, obviously not. The guild he was in was one of the top 5 on the server at that time.
My husband mostly plays male toons, but he has one female. I do razz him about it when he has her dressed in something a bit...revealing, but that's all.

Male blood elves are pretty much the most feminine char you can play, even more so then female be.

My warlock used to be male, but too many people wondered how I could make a male character when I am female. It just got tired of explaining that warlocks are supposed to be horrible, mean and ugly and that's why I made a human male warlock.
My bank alt is a male because he was meant to be a servant, a slave, the boring clerk. Oddly, he's quite pimped these days, I kinda felt sorry for him. Now he's kinda efficient at handling my affairs, so I guess boys do have some uses after all.
Hey, I hated guys when I started playing this game - they were daemonic and fit for nothing but servitude.
But I, as a male, dislikes playing an female char. I got one or two of them but I don't play on them. I think it's because I'd like to connect with the char I'm playing from time to time, and it just feels strange if that toon is female.A perfectly good reason to never play a female character. :) But to boys who think that you have to be a girl or a poofter to play a female character: get a grip on your manhood, sweetheart, don't assume that all guys share your own insecurities.

i play a female draenei priest and i'm a guy, there realy is no big problem with it, let people have their assumptions and assume what you are and if you get offended by what they think, correct them. The no were near all mighty ignore button will help in these situations if they keep doing it.
I have:
Male Draenei Warrior (Main)
Male Draenei Shaman (Fenris)
Male Dwarf Hunter
Female Human Warrior
Female Night Elf Hunter
Male Human Mage
Male Human Pally
Female Draenei Priest
(soo to be re-made a Worgen) Male Draenei DK
Female Human DK (Fenris)
Male Blood Elf Rogue
Female Blood Elf DK (Veknilash)
Edit: i forgot what i have, most of these chars i lvl with RL friends.

I play about half and half female/male characters....my casters/healers are female and my tanks/melee dps are guys....dunno why I do it that way.
I do the same thing and got a interesting reaction from one of my coworkers IRL when he saw the toon in game while we were playing.

I have both male and female characters that I play regularly. The sex of the character depends on the concept that I come up with; anyone who has disparaging remarks about it in-game gets one second of my time (long enough to type /ignore).
