I'm not ashamed, I'm more proud kind of. I am female, so when I say I play WoW people always /gasp! I'm used to the stupid jokes about it, so I ignore them by now. And when people called me a nerd I say:
"Nerd? I prefer the term 'intellectual badass.'" Usually shuts them up because they are clever enough to come up with a response.
I do not require the approval of "society" to conduct my life.
And this.
the world needs more girls like you, or at least in my area...

When "society" consists of friends and family whom you neglect to immerse yourself in
this
world, you most definitely should require their approval.

If someone wants make fun of me for what i do or how i spend

All my friends will still be my friends if a play wow or not so i could care less about others opinion.
The people who make fun of you play Xbox or PS3 for the same or if not longer amount of time you play WoW

Not particularly. I'd guess most of my coworkers know that my primary point of evaluation for a new machine was "will it play WoW decently".

I'm not really ashamed of playing it, but I don't tell anyone unless they tell me first if they play it.
It's funny though, when I first started playing WoW I got made fun of by some people, and those same people play for hours on an Xbox 360 or PS3. And they're fantasy games.
I guess that would be... console-ist?

It's more the fact that it is an MMORPG, not that it is a video game. People think its weird that a person creates a virtual avatar to immerse themselves in a world where they can communicate and do things with other people's avatars. People assume that players find interaction with other people through their virtual character to be more enjoyable than interaction in real life, which is often the case.
WoW is indeed unlike any other game, in both good and bad ways.

Not at all.
I am, however, afraid it may threaten to destroy my academic career.

Videogames are a sport.
Chess today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee. The first official World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886; the current World Champion is Viswanathan Anand.
The IOC approves and look at curling! Is curling very physical? No, it's a skill game that uses the mind, just like chess.
My little bro spend hours in water surfing, is he considered like a geek? NO but he should be.

This made me laugh, not sure why.
If playing WoW makes you happy, then it counts as something constructive in RL.
