I see no point in flushing 15% of whatever cash I want to transfer, so rather than putting a cheap item on for a high price, I put an expensive item on for a low price and hurry up and buy it before it's snatched by someone else.. Admitted, it's riskier but the profit is much greater..
Lets say I want to transfer 1000g from the horde to the alliance side. First I scan both Ally AH and Horde AH to look for easy sell-able items that is more expensive on the ally side than the horde side. Stuff like uncut gems, orbs or enchant mats are normally okay.
Lets for arguments sake say that Cardinal Ruby
are 130g on the horde side and 150g on the ally side, it's not all that uncommon with a price difference like that, then I buy 8 Cardinal Rubys for 1040g on the Horde side.
Next comes the risky part. I have two accounts because I used to do quite a bit of cross-realm trading. If you don't have two accounts, have a friend ready on Skype or ask him over, start wow twice and log in on both your own and his account at the same time so you can alt-tab between the accounts.
Anyway, on account #1 you go to Booty Bay, Everlook or Gadgetzan with the horde char with the 8 Cardinal Rubys.
On account #2 you go to Booty Bay, Everlook or Gadgetzan on an ally char. Open the auction window and enter "Cardinal Ruby" in the search field, but don't press the search button just yet.
Swap to #1, put the 8 Cardinal Rubys on for 10g.
Swap to #2 very fast, hit the Search button and do Buyout as fast as you can.
That's it. The goblins take 15% of the 10g = 1.5g fee and your ally now has 8 Cardinal Rubys that should be able to fetch 1200g.
Now you could pick the safe way Riotus described instead, having your ally put a piece of linen cloth on sale for 1000g, then buy it with a horde char, but then the goblins will keep 150g as fee, leaving your ally with 850g.
Personally I like gold and the potential for earning by cross realm transfer is great, just compare AH prices to pick the right items to transfer. As far as the risk goes, I have yet to ever lose an item and I've done at least a hundred transfers, I used to do it quite regularly for profit.
I've heard stories about people running "bottom scanner addons" that buys anything that costs less than 1s, so normally I keep my auctions in the 10g range and so far I've had 100% success rate. If someone has an addon running to snatch anything in the 10g range, I have a bunch of 9g "Refreshing Spring Water" for his addon to buy.. ;-)
