Nvidia 9800 GTX is a good graphics card. Some of my friends who play more demanding games really suggest core i7 processors. Once you pick your processor, look at its socket type and find a motherboard that matches that. Check to see what type of RAM that motherboard accepts, and how much it'll recognize, and buy that - for example, my processor is a socket 939 (outdated, you won't see any of these on Newegg), and my motherboard can only recognize up to 4 GB of DDR RAM. It mostly depends on your budget and needs, so start with those. Also, if you have an old case, re-use it and save yourself a couple hundred dollars.

I just checked the advice I gave against what a friend told me. Going to quote him here.
If you are planning on using SLI, I would recomend:
Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad
nVidia nForce 750i or better chipset
4-8GB of DDR2
This configuration will provide you with two full speed PCI Express 2.0 slots without breaking the bank.
If you are not planning on using SLI:
Core i5 processor
a supporting intel motherboard.
4-8GB of supported RAM (I dont know if it is DDR2 or DDR3)
This will give you a bit more processor speed (I think - check the benchmarks comparing Core 2 Duo and Core i5), but it will limmit you to one full speed PCI Express 2.0 slot or two half-speed slots, thus making SLI less effective. This will cost about the same as the system above.
Or if you are rich:
CORE i7 NOTHING BEATS IT.
That was in response to my question about processor/motherboard/RAM. My recommendation for the video card still stands.

I'd keep an eye on Tiger Direct, Amazon, and Best Buy. Doubt you'll see any real deals on Best Buy, buy you never know. If you have an old desktop you don't use (or if someone you know is considering replacing theirs), you can empty the case of everything but the power supply (the inside should end up looking like the inside of
this
- check the images of it open). This way, you can use some of your budget on your hardware.
By the way, don't use a magnetic screwdriver. They can interfere with the parts.

For a reasonable priced computer spec, here's what I would go for:
GPU:
XFX GTS 250 1GB
CPU:
Core i5
or if your rich, the
Core i7
, or even if your rich and mental,
Core i7 Extreme Edition
... :O
Motherboard: Just any with decent RAM slots and compatibility with the chosen CPU.
RAM: About 6-12GB of the following: Core i5 Recommended RAM:
DDR3 1333
// Core i7 Recommended RAM:
DDR3 1600
// Core i7 Extreme Edition Recommended RAM:
DDR3 2200.
Not sure about heat sinks.
And lastly, need a cool case?
Try this!
Hope this helped. Good luck with the build!
