I'm having troubles with my laggy UI.
Return to board index
Up until a week ago, I was using a fairly "unconfigured" UI - DBM, Grid, quartz, and a few other less intrusive addons like outfitter. My framerate was at a solid 20 FPS in raid combat. Lately in my boredom, I've been tinkering my UI a bit, and I decided on a layout that I really liked. However, my framerate in ICC 25 dropped to around 4 FPS. The extreme drop in framerate only happens in combat - I was still seeing 40 fps in the raid at rest.
Right now I'm using the following UI and actively functional addons:
Pitbull 3 (for player, target, target target, focus, and focus target)
Satrina Buff Frames
Grid (for raid and party)
I tinkered around with disabling combinations of addons and determined that if I disable Pitbull and GridManaBars, my framerate jumps to between 8 and 12 - a much more reasonable number - but I'm not ready to write off these addons as the only significant source of my lag. So I have a few questions:
-Does anybody see a disproportional amount of UI lag when using PB specifically, PB and Grid together, or any of the mods above?
-Is there a less intensive unit frame mod I should try (something that "plays well" with Grid, as I've seen nothing as clean and configurable as that)?
-I have the unused PB modules disabled in PB configuration. Would disabling the module in the wow character selection screen improve performance, or are the modules loaded only when they're enabled in the config? (I would test this myself but my constant logging in and out was annoying my raid members last night =P)
-What would happen if Thor were to pee on an electric fence?
I'm looking for function over form, but having the standard unit frames when everything else is nice and shiny-lookin' is bothersome. Any help is much appreciated.

One thing I might mention about ICC is that it is producing an order of magnitude more combat log entries than any of the other previous raids of Wrath. A full night of raiding in Ulduar was producing a combat log of maybe 90-120 megabytes. A night of ICC is producing a combat log of 200+ megabytes. All those extra events have to be filtered through all the addons you have that process them. More processing, more lines, more work, more lag. ICC is very hard on people's computers.
Sorry to hijack, but could having more macros also cause noticeable client lag? I had to significantly lower my video settings to get back to smooth fps after adding some addons and macros. The addons are not that significant, at least I dont think so. No problems until I added Omen, Recount and Shadowed UF, but if I disable 1, 2 or all 3 of them, the lag is the same. Makes me think it was maybe the dozen ish macros I have saved now?
also just to clarify, I have Auctioneer, but it is disabled on my main, so that shouldnt be affecting framerate on that character right?
Tempest, it's not macros that'll cause lag; they're stored server-side, not client-side. Addons might, such as the ones you mentioned. I think that Auctioneer, due to it storing a massive database, will slow your game down even if it's not enabled.
A disabled addon won't even load its saved variables. Even if you do have it enabled, it will not incur a performance hit except on reloads, zone changes (maybe) and when it requires a lookup (i.e. you hover an item and it has to look up the info).
To me on my crappy computer, I feel that it's the addons that need to constantly be updated that slow down the game.
I used to use pitbull 3, and recently got rid of it in favor of grid for healing and it really helped my fps. I also got
in favor of sexy map. I use
for my player and target frames. It's not very configurable, and when I say not very, you really cant configure anything. But it looks a lot like the standard pitbull frames and does the job well enough. Dropped quartz for
...not as pretty but does the same stuff.
Like everyone above said...grid mana bars is a hog...so i dunno if you really need to be seeing everyone's mana. You could always let someone in vent tell you if raid mana is low and you should pop divine hymn or whatever it's called.
Also, turn them portraits off. They always slowed my computer down.
Thanks for the help everybody. I dropped GridManaBars from my UI entirely and replaced PB3 with PB4 - the LUA text tags are supposedly 2-3 times faster than the dogtags. Hopefully my next 25 is playable.
