demo looks amazing on the character sheet but it can't transfer those numbers into damage the way the other 2 trees can.
think you just need practice.

Once you become very comfortable with demo, then you'll do well.
My guild has two locks; me staying destro and the other who's played demo for a few months now. As he's gotten more used to it, and figured out the in's and out's by taking advantage of the revamped Decimation, he's pulling out pretty incredible numbers now (8k on putricide 25, partially because of taking advantage of the goo's being under 25%, and then getting some good soulfires out on the boss).
Get used to it, then not only will you do respectable dps, but provide very valuable raid buffs.

Using the soulfires you get from adds onto the boss is an example of you need practice. On the new ice boss in Voa I can almost keep soulfire going to whole time. When the orb is dead I throw em like mad at the boss and can get quite a few off. Since alot of end game content consist of boss's with adds, you can do this alot. Work on rotation, keep an eye out for decimation, and time your meta with Heroism and trinkets. I like to pop Meta and my trinkets on Hero and I hit like a damn truck. Practice makes perfect.

Typically, yes, that provides the most output. Although, having meta and trinkets on cd is not a good thing. So, depending on the fight, you still want to use them asap, and try and time them to come back up whenever hero is popped.

we're getting into incredibly minor points now but casting if you can get CoD recast to line up with your meta then you should definitely use it DURING meta and not while running in. you really want the 20% buff to your highest DPET spell ^_^
same goes, in a smaller way, to all DoTs... i actually wonder whether it would be worth clipping to recast your DoTs before meta wears of...
that's just me thinking out loud. it's probably stupid, the point is casting DoTs before meta ends means you're getting more out of the damage bonus.

I've been raiding 25s as demo to boost the raid, and personally, I've been timing meta with ring and/or lightweave procs (and of course, heroism)

that's definitely a good thing but you should be careful not to delay things too long. you'd lose far more if you miss an extra meta towards the end of a fight than if you don't manage to line up procs and use the metas anyway.

charging and teleporting wastes GCDs which is always bad but never worse than during meta.
run in and run out unless you have a good reason to do otherwise.
