that 4k ambush in vanilla became a 5k ambush in TBC and a 6k ambush in wotlk.
the sub spec was designed for vanilla and hasnt been updated for TBC and wotlk.
the spec is terrible, its mobility is a joke, and so are the talents.

I don't think sub spec will stay broken forever. I don't mean to imply they'll be changing the talents in the spec all that much... but I'm speculating that a few tweaks in the sub tree combined with other changes that will be made to pvp will create conditions that make sub spec feel less broken. For example, we know armor pen is going away, so how will they change serrated blades to keep it useful? Maybe a percent to crit? Who knows? A slight buff to hemorrhage might help sub rogues bring a better on-target DPS buff to boss fights, more in line with combat's savage combat.
When leveling back in BC I used to play split combat/sub and had a lot of fun with that in solo PVE and BGs. Totally different landscape, now, though...
If you are interested in totally owning in PVP you'll need to spec for max fast dps (mutilate spec in PVP, for now), study the rogue tactics out there, and unless you are really good, bring a friend. Or two.

First of all, Armor Pen isn't going away completely. Abilities like Sunder Armor and Faerie Fire will still function the same way. Armor pen will no longer appear on gear as a stat to be itemized for. It will likely be moved to the spec specific bonuses derived from the mastery stat. This will help with the problems that arose recently, where armor penetration leather is used by combat rogues and not mutilate, who now favor haste.
Serrated Blades, then, will return to it's place as a rather unique talent. Subtlety as a whole is a very maligned tree right now, yet it contains almost all of our fun mobility talents. Sub is nothing if not the best ambushing spec in the game, but it's damage ability really has fallen by the wayside in terms of endgame. Where it truly shines is in exactly the situation you describe -- stalking and destroying lone opponents and then running away to do it again. The spec really had its heyday in Burning Crusade when hemo provided nice damage when using combat weapons. Lots of the tools are there and the theme of the tree is great.
All that said, it's perfectly viable for soloing and early instancing and is a lot of fun to play in PVP, so if you want to do it, I really encourage you to. Just be ready to move to Mutilate or Combat if you do decide to take this toon raiding.

agree completely with blackmojo.
also, we need to wait for cataclysm, since sublety tree (i hope) will be changed a lot and from the early screens one of the mastery bonuses will be more energy regen.
ok, it's too early to say anything, but the idea of having 3 viable raiding specs makes me giggle.

Seconded. Here's hoping.

If you really want to have fun, do what I did and couple up with 2 more sub rogues. Three sub rogues working together in AV is flat out unfair. One of us would walk right up to someone and them hit us, then another would cheap shot him, get a couple of shots in, kidney shot, vanish, let the next guy start up on him until he vanishes, and if the guy is still alive, the first guy (who ran off and re-stealthed) would finish him. Most of the time they don't even know it was 3 on 1. They think they just fought 1 super-ninja because they never saw more than one at a time.
