Say "I Really need (X) piece. I'll pass/greed on all other drops. If there is anybody else who needs it, let's roll for it. Is everybody ok with that?" That should work. Anybody who has a problem with that isn't worth running with. If people are booting you for shards, that's pathetic. If the item has already been reserved by friends- not a lot you can do about it. You were fine, just be very clear, and very fair.

can be booted from an instance you specifically queued for as it doesn't give you dungeon debuff or a shot at random badges.
