ok... so minor argument in vent, I say that each individual boss in ulduar has their hardmode started seperatly, in our case destroying XT's heart. He says that even if we go into XT's "harder " mode by destroying the heart its different then hard mode, hard mode being activated by destroying FL with 4 towers first, and then destroying XT's heart.
So... the answer would be?

The towers on Flame Levi have no effect on XT's hard mode, as far as I know.

No. Xt's hardmode is not dependent on Flame Levi's. You can kill Xt's heart and enter the hardmode, regardless of whats happened before.

Ok, I thought so, but he was certain enough, and had run it enough (if obviously not lead them) that I felt it deserved a post.

Ulduar boss encounters were not linked in that method, or at all. leaving the 4 tower up for the siege put Loot Leviathan on hard mode and had no effect on XT or any other boss in the raid instance.
Leviathan had 5 modes; 0 towers, 1 tower, 2 towers, 3 towers, 4 towers.
More towers means more things to make the fight harder.
XT has 2 modes; Not killing the heart, and killing the heart.
Killing the heart restored his health to full and added additional mechanics.
