Even in PvP Disc isn't really about dealing damage, it's about surviving it. But you can pull off enough for heroics, AoE is about the same as shadow, just a lot weaker, DoT & Mindsear. Single target is more like DoT > MB > HF > Smite. Just don't expect to match any real DPS class.

If you want to do some DPS while also healing when running Heroics, Holy Nova becomes a very interesting spell, just be careful with whirlwinding mobs and don't go completely OOM.
And yes, your priority as Disc is always to heal, unless you decide to run with 2 healers and the other healer has little DPS potential (Holy Paladin being the only one I can think of that can't really DPS in healer spec...).
In my opinion, using DoTs on trash is a bit of a waste of mana. I always figured if your DoT can't go through its entire duration (because its target dies too fast), then it's not worth casting it.
So... on AoE pulls, I spam Holy Nova, on single target trash, I go Mind Blast -> Holy Fire -> Smite spam and on bosses, SW:P -> DP -> Mind Blast -> Holy Fire -> Smite spam.
You can always do some DPS, especially as Disc, simply throw a PW:S on everyone and a PoM on the tank, that way, you don't get caught red-handed if all hell breaks loose or someone steals aggro from the tank, and you also get an audible warning when time comes to pay attention to the tank, as you'll notice the sound of the PoM proccing off him when the mobs manage to damage through your PW:S. Anyhow, this usually gives you enough time for a couple offensive spells.
As for guides... You probably weren't looking at the right place, there are guides to the Discipline way all over the place, but give those a read, to get you started...

Edit: As far as your spec is concerned, Reflective Shield and Imp. Mana Burn have no use in PvE, so this is what you should be running with...

(heroics & raids) or, alternatively, this, if you really want Divine Fury for quicker cast Smite & Holy Fire...

(heroics only).

I'll do some DPS on the easier isntances because I don't have much else to do or just to make the instance go a little faster.
I tend to bubble my tank and throw a POM on him. The minute I see him (or anyone else) take any damage or his shield drop, I back off DPS and go back to healing.
My job is healing, any DPS is icing.

Oh, and re Penance being an offensive spell -- it's a REALLY lame offensive spell. Even if you're DPSing, that's better used as a heal on CD unless there is absolutely NO need for any healing in your group/raid. Penance just sucks that much for hurting others.
...just like every other Holy/Disc damaging spell... As a Disc Priest, we aren't supposed to be dealing ANY damage unless there is absolutely NO need for any healing in our group/raid. :P
With the BT buff, Penance is still better DPS than an unglyphed/untalented Smite... And honestly, PW:S, PoM and Flash Heal is all a Disc Priest really needs to heal heroics, maybe toss a PoH once in a while for specific fights...
