Letting someone die usually amounts in a fail because your dps no longer has the potential to destroy him. At least in 10 man.

Most ten man kills that I've participated in we only ended up having 1-2 marks and we were still able to land the kill with them down.

He quite clearly stated 10 man. Aside from that, our guild is happy to let marked players die dependent on their role or output and we rarely struggle.
That said, it's fairly pointless now with the marks no longer generating BP for Saurfang.
