Awful FPS in raids

My pc is 3 1/2 years old so I think it may just be getting too slow for wow. Cpu is an amd x2 dual core 1.8 ghz, I have 2 gigs of ram, running xp, and the graphics card is an ati xt1900.
I don't know that much about graphics cards so I don't know how great the card is now. I'm wondering what my limiting factor is right now. If I put the graphics on low I can eek out 20 fps on fights like lord marrowgar in 25 man raids, but after an attempt or two I start lagging bad, drop to 6ish fps and wow kind of stutters. If I reboot it helps for a bit then gets slow again. Does that sound like my vid card is overheating or something (wearing out)? My cpu load is showing about 60% usage so I'm wondering if it's my graphics card or cpu that needs an upgrade.

If it's a matter of upgrading piece by piece as and when funds are available (dont worry, I completely understand that point!) I would say first and foremost add in another 2gigs of ram, for a total of 4gb ram. I would say, out of the immediate upgrades, this should help the most.

You really think so? I thought wow was not very ram intensive.

Hm, I actually got a good performance boost out of upgrading my video card. I was using a PCIe 512mb on a system with 2gb of RAM; I upgraded to a 1gb card and my performance now is pretty good on moderate settings. I'm planning on adding another 2gb of RAM and I think I should be set.
One thing you can do to up your FPS on fights that will be very AoE intensive is to turn off projected textures. (I think) This is the setting that causes player spells that have ground effects (Rain of Fire, Consecrate, etc.) to project onto the ground; turning that off always jumps my FPS.

I have that turned off, everything is on low. It's kind of fishy actually, setting the graphics to low got me slightly better fps but it still degrades over time. After a couple attempts I'm back to unplayable again, then I reboot and it works for a while. So I wonder what this indicates, seems like something is wearing out.

Ican only go off of personal experience as I am no expert, but I've upgraded computers numerous times for the sole purpose of MMOs, and from what I can recall the ram always helped.

Sounds like a memory leak. I haven't noticed it in WoW in my case.
Go into Task Manager and check the Processes tab to see what is using up memory other than WoW.

That almost sounds like a memory leak. Unfortunately, I dont know a whole lot about it other than its caused from the system not properly allocating memory usage. If this is the case, your problem seems to be rooted in not enough RAM.
but again, im not expert. Im sure another wowhead poster could help ellaborate?

Cpu is an amd x2 dual core 1.8 ghz,
This here is your issue.
CPU > Memory > Graphics, in wow.

Memory leaks are actually an issue with
de
allocating memory.

Another thing that you may want to try is updating your video cards drivers.

I upgraded my gpu from onboard to a Radeon HD 4870 and it is rare I see under 60 fps on high settings except in Dalaran which is still 30-40 fps. I also have 4gb of RAM and a AMD Phenom II x4 720 BE (3.2ghz) cpu.
On my laptop the fps sux and the only thing that allows it to be playable is to have WoW as the only thing running.
But in your case it sounds like the memory leak suggestion or a heating issue. Download CoreTemp or CPUID or something similar and check your temps and see how they look just to rule that out.
