No, they're purely cosmetic - you can get bonuses while getting them, but the points does nothing other than being a number to brag about.

Achievement points shouldn't be able to get anything physical ingame IMO. I'm an achievement &*!@# but I know not everyone wants to fall to near death for a nice flashy rectangle.
That said, there should be an achievement for getting X achievement points.
